They should remain up and remind people how far society has come. You cannot erase history and when you rid this history from the public it soon forgets. Leaving the statues up reminds people about it

Scarily logical but massively ignored in society
As I argued with someone recently… your happy to keep the buildings and infra paid for by these people but destroy the history
