Thomas Frank - Head Coach

He froze Bissouma out himself and was the manager in charge that sold Johnson and Son (who all the mega brains on here were claiming was past it and no longer good enough last season - funny how he's now suddenly one of the main reasons why Frank's Spurs are so diabolical).

If we compare our squad at the start of last season with the start of this season I think most would argue our squad at the start of this season was stronger. If there are people that don't feel it was stronger at the start of this season then I think those people need to seriously look at the manager and DoF who spent a lot of money on players who have made us worse.... that is the opposite of what you are supposed to do when spending a large net amount of money on transfers.

The DoF / transfer committee has made an absolute omnishambles of things:

Sacking a cup winning manager for someone who’s never won anything and doesn’t even play champagne football, so was always destined to be as unpopular as NES and Mourinho.

Not splashing the cash on Semenyo and instead crossing their fingers in the hope that Tel or Odobert would miraculously develop into world class wingers in the space of a few months

Loaning a PSG castoff who clearly doesn’t want to play for us and has thus far been about as useful as Werner.

Not doing their due diligence on Gibbs-White or Eze leaving us a laughing stock then taking a punt on a talented attacker who’s going to need a season to get up to speed; even though they knew that both Kulusevski and Maddison wouldn’t be fit to play for many months.

Failing to sign a left footed FB to provide cover for Udogie, who has now suffered 4 hamstring injuries in 20 months.

Not upgrading on Vicario who (despite being a decent shot stopper) remains a vampire who cannot play a decent pass to save his life.

Going for the cheap option of Palhinha to anchor midfield instead of pushing the boat out on a Wharton or Anderson who can both shield the defence and dictate the passing tempo of a game.

Considering the ticket prices ENIC demand at our magnificent new stadium it really don’t feel like the glory days are any closer to returning and the Europa Cup win might prove to be another flash in the pan; like the last 3 trophies we’ve picked up since Burkinshaw left.

I really wish it was just that, go watch some of the youtube analysis stuff on Frank's Spurs, some by licensed coaches

- There is no play out pattern from defense
- There is no patterns of play/triangles to either move the ball, or retain possession
- There is no movement or expected runs ahead of player in possession, you see this when players are looking up and there literally is no pass on
- Our mid/low block is fudging useless, e.g. our standard 4-4-2 midblock against Villa was done by 2 passes through the middle (that fudging block is designed to block the middle and force the pass out wide), our low block allows opposition players to take shots from outside box (zone 14)
- Porro & Kudus have the highest and 2nd highest amount of crosses in the PL, when we typically only have 1 player in the box

And I could literally go on and on, we could talk about the horrendous subs, the freezing out of players, the fact that Bissouma who has been away from Frank's training actually looked better than our other players. Our players literally looked uncoached.

Why? will probably be speculation, nothing about Frank's system at Brentford should require top PL level players 6 months to grasp/understand, and even if it did, we should have had a good game or two where it clicked by now. The simplest answer is probably the most likely, i.e. our players where underwhelmed by his appointment, his concepts and coaching and don't want to play this brick "don't lose" football, that combined with the PL this season is even more about physicality and running, Frank's passive approach gets overrun every time (not a coincidence that when we do chase 2-0 down and up the tempo, we look significantly better).

All to say, the club should have seen this 2 months ago and made a call, and if they didn't make the call, be damn sure they had alternatives (interim/long term) lined up.

Of course all YouTube dudes are higher level coaches than a guy that’s managed in the PL…

Everything is easy in hindsight.

I have FA coaching qualifications too, it’s not that exclusive.

I think we both know this debate won't be going anywhere, but from what I saw people said KUlu/Madison etc would make a bit of a difference but would still ultimately be the same brick football.

I always thought Frank should be given the season at least, but I feel like the West Ham game broke the camels back for too many people for it be possible.....

Agreed.

I really think it is not that these players aren’t good enough, it’s that they are low on confidence and expected to execute perfectly on a smaller number of opportunities they get presented with. And if that’s how they’re used to playing, it’s fine. But RKM is now being referred to as the guy on loan that’s disinterested and doesn’t want to be here for example and I don’t think that’s fair. He’s a good player performing way below his level.

Would we have a few more points on the board with prime Kane and Son up top? Of course. But it shouldn’t be this bad. It means something bigger is going on than pure player quality, and that’s I think why West Ham broke a lot of people.

Yup, turns out quality > quantity and replacing a legendary LW who had a world class talent for scoring goals from the edge of the area with 2 youngsters who might come good in a few years time could end up costing us more in the long run than stumping up for a Semenyo last summer.

People will hate this, but it is also the intent you're sent out with.
Put simply, we are sent out primarily to nullify the other side and profit on the break/counter/second-balls.
Last season we were sent out to attack and impress ourselves upon the opposition.
It is what it is.

BTW, a general point. I find it really funny to suddenly see Sonny of last season wistfully mourned when I clearly remember large swathes of people here saying he was finished, etc. Revisionism takes all forms I suppose. When Sonny announced he was off, I was keenly aware of what we'd miss.

It was brick football previously under Ange with those players too so of course that wouldn't change. New managers first season with a much better attack meaning we get a few more goals & points means we probably aren't where we are now though.

I'v never asked you this mate; do you like style of football we have consistently played this season? Would you be happy with this style of football executed via elite wingers and a powerhouse CF (Mateta-type)?

As is so often the case that you only really realise how good a player is when they are absent.

Like how people used to complain that Modric didn’t score enough goals but when he left they realised how important it was that our little maestro controlled the passing tempo of games; something we’re severely lacking nowadays with Palhinha who is an old fashioned pure DM.

Would be less of an issue if we had better passers around him but we’re hamstrung by having only 1 (injury prone) left footed player in the squad for that flank and a goalie whose passing is non-league standard.

Just plain poor squad building by the committee, allowing our top priority signings end up at hated rivals and then panic signing players who can do a job but aren’t upgrades on what we had.

Will be an all timer football story if Frank turns it around and leads us to some success based on this game. And also classic Spurs if we still sack him after he wins the game that everyone said he was dead man walking.

I really hope if he is sticking around then this is a springboard performance for Frank, and he begins to adopt a much more front foot style

Great performance but needs to follow it up at the weekend, can't be just a once off.

We’ve tried to be front foot at times. We simply haven’t had the players to do it consistently. Starting with Solanke tonight was massive. His movement and hold up play made a real difference.
