The Overlap - some interesting comments from Ange

Ange is still on the payroll as we will be paying his departure in stages and there is an NDA in place - Spurs and all clubs do it - so he's discussed what he can and likely can't go into some stuff without losing his payout.

Lovely to see him looking so relaxed though, the two settlements in 5 months will have helped I am sure!

Dunno if that would be the case? Him accepting the Forest job would likely waive the payout? Maybe...no idea. You may very well be right about the NDA but if so it seems a bit of a pointless interview.

Surprised an NDA would allow him to have this sort of interview and ok to say Tottenham don't act like a big club etc....

Seemed really short to me TBH, I skipped all the filler before and after so haven't watched it all, but was there a reason for how brief it was?
I watch every episode, and the guest is usually talking for a lot longer than that. The length of the whole podcast was about the same as usual, but they filled it with the miscellaneous things more than usual....

Sports Journalism is so flooded with ex pros trying to forge a career that 90% of the dross that comes out is pointless. I love the Fighting C.ock, but they have nothing to say that is in any way progressive or thought provoking every week - I listen to share in the ups and downs of other fans of the club.

They record two podcasts every fortnight and put them out weekly. They were scheduled to have Ange for next week's podcast but I'd imagine with what happened yesterday, they couldn't hold off that long so shoehorned him into this week's podcast.

Yeah I knew that, they clearly cut a lot more of the interview though - not sure why they needed to do that? Surely more are interested in listening to Ange rather than extending how long they bang on about the Super 6....

Super 6 can do one but the moment of the episode was Roy Keane shouting 'Harry Kane?' during the top 5 free kick takers part.

He was turning up to do the following podcast, so probably only got there halfway through filming. In the wake of Franks sacking, production probably made the decision to get him on when he turned up, as don't guests usually start at the beginning of the podcast after they've done their arrival skitt?

Don't worry....he's on 'next week's as well...so maybe more to come?
Ah that'd make sense. They have to fill next week's episode with something they recorded yesterday.

I'm looking forward to listening to Ange in a bit of detail. I don't rate him as a manager at the very top level but I always found him to be a brilliant speaker with a very, very big picture view of things and a fascinating listen. His story is also remarkable. Just because I don't think he cut it here doesn't mean he hasn't been remarkably successful in football particularly when you take into account where and how he started.

The question is;

Who will cut it in a post Kane and Son era with current ‘constraints’.

Dont forget, we are shopping the same as the likes of Palace. Not the big boys. So expectations on ‘cutting it’ have to be realistic.

I think it's really interesting the way he talks about the "S pursy" tag being an issue within the club, adding to the mentality holding us back.

It's a great question generally. I don't know how any manager can be successful if successful is winning trophies regularly or challenging for the league regularly. We've won 2 league titles in almost 150 years and it seems like some of our fans won't be happy unless we are regularly winning trophies and pretty much always challenging for the league. We also don't compete on wages by design but the club always puts out statements that indicate the expectation is "top 4 and competing on all fronts". So expectations from the club and the fans are unrealistic in comparison to the resources we provide.

So it's almost impossible for a coach to meet expectations at Tottenham. However, my comment on Ange is about his style of play and its suitability to coaching at this level. From pretty early on in his first season, I was always very concerned that he was too focused on offensive play to get the most out of what he had results-wise. I stand by that but fully acknowledge that I'm judging him at an insanely high standard against the absolute elite in the game. Despite that being my opinion on him, I think he's an excellent football manager, a very intelligent guy, a very engaging speaker and has admirable ideals. And, to be fair, there were many games where I really enjoyed watching his team.

To cover off two points in your post.

Our pool of available coaches will certainly shrink based on them seeing how we act.

Second point. I genuinely think Ange had started to change. A few of the later Europa games were shaped around not conceding. I thought he'd started to play to his strengths which was VDV and Romero at the time. Forget the league form. We were going in with a shadow defence most games playing at 50%. I think had he stayed he would have found a basic plan B for about 6-8 games per season and I think most would have been ok with that. I'm not saying he would have been a success, but it would have shown development.

Famous last words but I’d never have him back as a manager, but I wouldn’t be too upset with some sort of director of football role.
