***The official health and fitness thread***

With the prospect of another long lockdown and no gyms I've finally decided to get around to converting the garage and getting some equipment. Has anyone got any experience of home gyms?
I need a bench and weights but what else would you prioritise if you didn't have a huge space? Been looking at bikes and/or rowers etc. But haven't made any decisions yet. Also assume I need to cover a section of the floor with that gym mat style flooring, is that easy to get hold of?
Any suggestions welcome...

That matting is a great idea - gets you into the ‘zone’. Must be cheap to buy some interlocking rubber mats. And can use it for abs work out etc.

I got a cheap as chips bench from Argos. Some individual dumb bells that you can add weight to is a must. Then extra units of weight you can add on (each day [emoji123]) to the bench or dumb bells.

Get a bike or do some hi intensity lighter weights for cardio. Personally not a massive fan of the (pricy) machines.

I’d given up going to gyms anyways. Much easier to do 2 quick work outs a day at home/ work in my case.

I do a little weights training but that is purely for my own individual health issues.

Think most normal people would be better off using resistance bands.

Anyone who wants some good yoga videos for beginners let me know and I'll PM you a link. I find it helps with the mind as much as it helps with the body. It's easy to do from the home too, just need enough space to lay down and a mat if you can find one helps.

Just bought some weights for the same reason, got these from Mirafit:

Bench - https://mirafit.co.uk/mirafit-m2-adjustable-weight-bench.html
Bars - https://mirafit.co.uk/mirafit-m3-olympic-dumbbell-bars.html (I got the dumbell bars and 4 collars in 17cms)

Then you can get plates from anywhere as olympic is just standard size. Mirafit do some cast iron tri grip ones but they aren't on the website as sold out. You could try https://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.u...-iron-tri-grip-weight-disc-plates-singles.php or https://www.fitness-superstore.co.u...ates/cast-iron-tri-grip-olympic-weight-plates (I just got some of these but the lower weights are out of stock).

When looking I found it's worth spending a little bit extra to get quality stuff that should last years. I don't have room for anything else but the new bike things are good but are subscription based like Peloton. There's Apex which is new but the actual bike is a bit cheaper (https://apexrides.com) or my mate who is massively into fitness has a watt bike which he loves and they do re-conditioned ones but again not cheap (https://wattbike.com/gb).

I'd definitely get a squat rack if you have the space.

See what Aldi has for sale. I got the mats and a weighted bag form there very cheap and great quality
Swiss ball is great as it doubles as bench for quite a few exercises and also for balance and core work
Kettle bells are very flexible and readily available and you can do cardio and strength easily
Free weights are great and even a light weight can do a lot of good

Cheers, some good advice there. I managed to to get a decent bench and some mats for the floor. Just need a dumbell set now and then will decide whether to also get something for cardio (bike, rower etc)

Missed a lot of footy this year but also my drive to exercise has completely diminished significantly since wfh for most of the year (oddly the incentive to leave a desk for an hour or so seems higher when it’s a public one rather than a private one!)
I have bought a bike as I think I’ll find it more interesting than running, but if I’m looking to build up my ability to sprint / turn is this in an ineffective way to build up footy fitness? I’ve bought some resistance bands to aid some Physio I have to do for my shoulder, a wobble board and a dumbbell set but in the past I’ve tended to focus on a 5k run at one pace and core strength work to tide me over whilst playing once or twice a week. Any tips or recommend resources to put together a program to help me get into a shape that will help me hit the ground running / not pull a muscle the first time I sprint for the ball??

Just start slow and make it easy. Whatever you’re doing and enjoying, keep a note of what time/load you did and do a little more each day. First off just get your body used to moving about, get yourself a little out of breath and gradually increase as you feel stronger.

Just inspired me to check this out on a black F deal https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B078NS1THT/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=A2TH8EVCBZIJ5O&psc=1

Good for upper body and core. Idea is every time you pass it, do 5-10 pull ups. Think it’s a better way to workout doing small amounts through the day than putting a large stress on your body for 1 hour. But I’m no expert!

Ha I have one of those too, however i snapped two tendons in my fingers about 3 months ago making a save so I still can’t make a fist! It’s a good thing as you will only be able to do a few at first but if it’s something you walk pass regularly you’ll just jump on it to try and beat your pb!

Do you have those mini hand exercise machines? Did you see that climbing film (free solo?) where the pro climber fellah chopped off his thumb doing some DIY? All the hand exercises climbers do look like punishment!
