If it was a 'violent' pull I can understand the rule and the red card, it was minimal.

I don't know why a hair pull is an automatic red card tbh - is it any worse than pulling someones shoulder or arm or whatever?

That's the thing, you can be cynical and whack someone down in their half when counter attacking and get a yellow. Undid Calvert-Lewin's hairband and gets a red.
