The 'If You Still Need to Purge Yourself Of Ange' Thread

Thought he communicated terribly when with us.

As I said in a thread elsewhere a few days ago, he can’t have been communicating effectively with the players if they lost 22 PL games, these losses often involving a goal conceded within the first 10 minutes, shortly after he was apparently delivering his words with ‘maximum effect.’

In press conferences, he was often snippy and unnecessarily aggressive. He spent post-match interviews staring at the floor.

Imo he also gaslit the press and the fans, moving from the position of ‘I would never sacrifice a game’ when we were playing City as Arsenal went for the title, to informing us that he had chucked in the PL this season in January (interestingly, he only chose to communicate that to everyone post the EL win - for me, he was attempting to rewrite history at that point and looking to excuse his own PL failings).

And there were also the unnecessary rows with fans, and the cupping of his ear to the away fans at Chelsea (and then very obviously being caught out when asked about it in the post-match interview, ridiculously saying he was encouraging them to make some noise)…

For me, the myth of him being an excellent communicator is right up there with the myth of Angeball. Both are as real as unicorns.
I think I watched every press conference he conducted as Spurs manager. You're talking absolute codswallop if you genuinely think he's a terrible communicator.

Can we have a poll decide whether a poll is the best solution? Whilst we're at it can I have a Conte thread where I can wax lyrical over his remarkable achievements in the game and subsequent meltdowns?

Maybe I'm misreading it because I'm thoroughly hungover but the thread seems a bit tetchy. I blame Ange for having the audacity to win a trophy with us, definitely makes things a bit wierd for those who are usually used to sneering at success.

It is a free site so if you want to create a thread, go ahead mate. If I can create one, anyone can.

I'm sure the definition of a good communicator is different for everyone.

My problem with Ange was that he was a good communicator to the masses including the young players, mostly in their twenties, but fell way short of being convincing to those of us that looked through the bigger picture lens. Those numbers were growing week by week.

Ange was actually very clever with words. He was well rehearsed and knew how to evade the tough questions. In fact, when you looked closely he never actually answered the toughest questions. Like all great politicians do, he just found an adjacent topic and answered a question on that instead. He would preach crazy nonsense like Mr Hindsight and pretend he was straight talking. He was anything but.

At times I felt like shaking the guy and making him answer the questions asked. He could get as spiky as he wanted with me but it wouldn't have made one iota of difference. I would have held him accountable to answer the bloody question. It's Ok being aggressive when you know the other guys aren't allowed to be aggressive back. He knew all those journo's had to toe the line and he used that to his advantage.

On his 2 year journey with Spurs, Ange lost any authentic public persona with so many of us.

What is this 'bigger picture lens' that so few apparently did not avail themselves of?

Good grief. It's the press mate. No manager likes doing it, not because it's awkward or tough but because it's boring, repetitive and near enough meaningless to said managers objectives.

I should have put that in my post above. I have in pretty much all the others over time. It's not easy being that person that has to face the press. It does go with the job title though. Doesn't change my opinion.

As I said above, the bigger picture was whether he was actually answering the true question being asked, especially the tougher ones. So many times he could talk for 2-3 mins and when you referred back there was a mismatch between his chosen narrative and the question asked.

Is this where we are at now? Being offensive to anyone who doesn't hold Ange to be a football demi GHod? Is this thread just about attacking anyone who thought there were good reasons to sack Ange and agreed with the club's decision to sack him and doesn't follow the obvious set narrative? So really the thread should be renamed the Ange tribute thread -post if you have nice things to say. This thread should go into general football IMHO. sorry @thfcsteff no offense meant to you.

It doesn't surprise me that you are sticking up for someone talking bollox.

There's been countless posts calling Ange all sorts of horrible names, literal threads about hating Aussies......but this is where you speak up??

(happy to be wrong and for you to point out posts where you've called things out)

Ange isn't here. Posters are.

Why are you even on here? You don't by your admission like most Spurs fans on here. Whether the topic is Levy, Poch or now Ange you are always complaining and posting negative anti fan tripe. You do know that it was a club decision to sack Ange? So unfortunately you can't blame the fans.

Jose, Conte, Nuno, AVB all got far worse treatment, despite having much better stats.

Why the pearl clutching now?

Maybe some are just finding it impossible to admit they were wrong about him…

The press and good publicity is important. The clubs care about how they are represented in the press or they wouldn't spend thousands on PR and media teams. Their manager represents them the most. So yes dealing with the media is an important skill for modern managers and for me, the way he dealt with them in his second season when under pressure, indicated part of his inexperience of operating at this level.

Arrggggghhh dammit you’ve pulled me back in to discussing this.

Which players though? The Ben Davies / Archie Gray centre back run? Or just the patched up 11 that was basically playing every 3 days for 3 months straight?

I would argue that the fact that they came through that period and STILL believed they were going to win something is testament to Ange’s ability to foster belief in a set of players who play for a club that had become a joke when discussing ability to win trophies. Any other manager would have gone through that run and lost them. He didn’t.

But if your view is that Ange is bad because of the league defeats, we simply will never agree. There’s no point debating it.
I am not a tactically brilliant so pls help me with this.

With the players who stepped in, too me at times we were still playing like we had rom and vdv. Despite our depleted back line, was it not possible to stop playing so high? Or was that not the case? Genuinely asking as I maybe misremembering some of the games.

(I dont know why we extended Davis for another year, but that's something else)

I think everyone has valid points, and both points of view can be true. (Im ok with him not getting a 3rd season) But a massive thankyou for the cup

I think he almost certainly could have played in a completely different way to earn more points in the league. But I believe that he wanted to maintain enough of the principles of play so that we still had an identity that the players were bought into and comfortable with, so that in the third season we would be back to where we should be in the league.
