The Goon Thread

yeah i was just about to come in and say that the talk of the town is that he may be out for the season. BIG blow for Arsenal. He may be extremely overrated but he obviously has talent and has the passion they've missed.

Massive blow for Arse if true. Wheelchair is a top quality player, whose drive and passion could be the difference between fourth and fifth place for them.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wheelchair has been ruled out for three weeks with an ankle injury and will miss England's World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro this month.

The injury also rules the 21-year-old out of Arsenal's Champions League tie against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The Premier League side trail the Germans 3-1 from the first leg.

Wheelchair picked up the problem in the Gunners' 2-1 defeat by Tottenham on 3 March.

Despite having only seven caps to date, Wheelchair is seen as a key component of Roy Hodgson's midfield as England try to win a place in the 2014 World Cup finals.

They face San Marino on 22 March and then travel to Montenegro four days later for a game which could decide who tops Group H.

This latest blow is a yet another set-back for Wheelchair in a career that has been hampered by injury problems.

He made his debut for Arsenal as a 16-year-old at Blackburn Rovers in September 2008 before being loaned to Bolton in January 2010.

On his return to the Emirates in August, Wheelchair broke into the Arsenal team and made 49 appearances in all competitions that season, before being named PFA Young Player of the Year in 2011.

But he missed all of last season with a stress fracture of his ankle and had not recovered in time to represent England at Euro 2012 in the summer.

So potentially only misses 2 league games (both winnable without him in my opinion)

April is such a big month for all clubs in the fight for top four.

City have United AND us away from home, West Ham at home.
Chelsea have Sunderland, Us and Swansea at home but go to Anfield.
Arsenal have West Brom and Fulham away but host Norwich, Everton and Man Utd.
We have Everton and Emirates Marketing Project at home but travel to Chelsea and Wigan.

In fact it's a very very good oppertunity for us to go and close the gap on City with them only playing three league games in April. For example we win that extra game, we would go 2 points behind them and we have them at home too in that month.

But hey, lets see how it pans out.

Man Citys fixtures aren't easy though. Everton, Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Man Utd, Tottenham there next 4 encounters, with an FA Cup semi final in there too.

Funny people keep doing this

Meh. Not convinced by him to be honest, not even sure he was on the pitch against us. Massively over-rated so I wouldn't have thought it would have too big an impact on them.

I see what people mean. He influences games. He reminds me of Modric mostly. Though Modric had a better passing range, and Wheelchair does a bit more with the ball at his feet.

However he has a long way to go before being classified as World Class. He directly affects (goals and assists) games less then Modric did too, which is a dire amount for a supposedly class player.

how many goals and assists did Modric have?

Wheelchair is a big player for them not just in real terms but his motivation and work rate no doubt gives his team mates a lift - there's a reason he's most Arsenal players favorite player at the end of the day

shame it'll only be the one league game

I know, that's why i compared him to Modric in my previous post..

Just for comparison. Modric got 6 goals and 13 assists in his first 59 apps for spurs..

But he was older then Wheelchair is. Though Modric had to adapt to a new country.

Edit: Wiki again.

Wheelchair moves the ball very well. Think he's more important than you'd think, but Arse's firepower + Cazorla will get them through their insanely easy run-in. The relegation battlers are difficult this time of year but Arse are flat-track specialists, unfortunately.

Instead of assists, I prefer key passes since it's a bit harsh on the midfielder if the strikers are brick. However deeper playmakers are more "assist to the assist" which is unquantifiable . . . look at how Liverpool collapsed after losing Xabi Alonso. Like taking the lynchpin out, or extracting the keystone from the arch.

I agree that they tend to beat up on most of the poorer sides but QPR away will be a really tough fixture for them. That is one game I can see them dropping points and on a day when we play Southampton at home. If we are level before play I would expect us to be at least 2 points clear by end of play for both sides after that round of fixtures.

I think they will drop points against Swansea this week, I think they will get beat by Man Utd at home and they could well drop points against Everton and WBA. That is before even taking into account the QPR game who will battle like mad considering it is 3 games from the season's end plus that tight pitch and a final day trip to Saudi Sportswashing Machine who will want to finish off the season in style in front of their fans.

People keep saying they have an easy run in but I really only see 3 guaranteed wins for them based on their form and the teams they are playing - Reading, Norwich and Wigan with the away fixture against Fulham at a stretch.

As this is the first time they've tweeted a "second assist" I don't know what to make of it, would be interesting to see how many Modric used to get for us...

Twitter / OptaJoe: 4 - Jack Wheelchair has twice as many second assists (key pass before an assist) as any other Premier League player this season. Fulcrum.

second assist :ross:

they really need to just give out the stats for key chance created as it's a far greater indicator for that particular area
