The Gene Hackman thread

The French Connection contains one of the most beautiful shots in all cinema - it is actually the still used later over the closing credits. It's a simple, nothing kind of shot of Hackman and Schieder in very early morning sun back-light walking along the sidewalk. Lasts about a second and a half. Stunning.

Oh, and just to nail one of the great myths about 70's cinema: No, The French Connection II is NOT better than The French Connection. You hear it said repeatedly that it's one of the few examples of a sequel that's better than the original. Nice theory, it just happens not to be true. FCII certainly has its moments - the unforgettable opening scene with the fish on the dockside, the stunning final sequence of Doyle chasing the boat along the quay, and Popeye's amazing cold turkey episode - but overall the original is vastly superior.
