The Architecture thread..

For all of us interested in architecture if the is anyone else on here that is. My interest in it stems from my mother who was a "friend of Euston station" she and others were campaigning for the arch to be rebuilt infront of the stadium.

Some of the recent designs for a rebuilt Euston looked stunning to me but they have all been dropped for the time being until the new high speed 2 rail line is closer to completion(if ever).

What inspired me, the best poster on this site to write this thread was the news of Penn street station in New York being rebuilt. I have to say after my one and only visit to New York 2 years ago we went to Maddison Square garden and although i thought the ice hockey was crap i was very impressed with the arena. The station below was awful, we travelled from it the next day to Philadelphia, lovely trains, awful station.

Interesting article on it here. http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2013/jul/25/new-york-penn-station-ugly-train-world

I wonder if any New Yorkers on here could tell us where they plan to relocate the Garden to did not think the was much spare land around on Manhattan.

Some years ago in the boom times i remember reading in the evening standard of plans to build a Maddison Square Garden type arena in East Croydon next to the train station with an express style train service on a special link with oxford street, the plans for the redevelopment of East Croydon were stunning with buried rivers brought back to the surface, apparently their are more waterways in Croydon then in Venice.

With a fast link service to central london it would have been a popular venue and really boasted the area. I believe it was Branson who pruposed the new line but sadly it never got off the drawing board and i can not find a link for it.

Lots of plans for East Croydon still doing the rounds though.

I prefer to read more about planning/infrastructure than physical buildings myself but it sounds like this thread will talk around both. There have been dozens of abandoned plans for different infrastructure projects over the years in London anyway, haven't followed must of the rest of the country. Skyscraper city forum is a good read though the conversations can get a bit nerdy on there.

Reading that article it's amazing how bad the US infrastructure is, they barely use trains at all. All cars out there, they are supposedly building some high speed rail but for instance the line between LA and San Fran won't be built until 2028 and the top speed will be 135 mph, whereas the new line here will be 225mph, not sure why theirs is so slow.
