VILLA U21S 0-3 SPURS - PARKER ON TARGET AS U21s IMPRESS AGAIN

Scott Parker started and scored as our Under-21s clinched top spot in National Group One of the Barclays U21 Premier League with a win at Villa on Monday night.

The midfielder drilled into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after good work from Yago Falque and Jonathan Obika for the second goal on the stroke of half-time.

Parker, who made a long-awaited return to first-team action as a late substitute against Swansea on Sunday, completed 68 minutes and has now started twice in the space of a week for our Under-21s, having played a full shift at Sunderland last Monday.

Senior Professional Phase Coach Chris Ramsey insisted beforehand that he wanted the team to finish the first half of the season 'in the right way' and they did just that with another impressive performance at Villa Park.

It was the team's sixth win in their last seven matches and they will now compete in the Elite Group in the second half of the season.

The match marked a showdown for top spot with Villa requiring at least a point to secure their place in the Elite Group. It was all to play for.

Both teams looked to get on the front foot from teh first whistle. Ryan Fredericks was first to test Craig Hill in the Villa goal and the home team responded with Graham Burke's effort just over and Jordan Bowery sliding the ball over from close range.

Parker fired over from distance and Janoi Donacien somehow diverted the ball away from Obika in front of goal from Andros Townsend's cross. Townsend was excellent, a constant threat.

After a quiet spell, we opened the scoring in typical style on 31 minutes.

Townsend got on the ball in the left channel and rolled it into the path of Jack Barthram on the overlap. The full-back picked out Ryan Mason and the midfielder made no mistake from six yards.

Parker's goal arrived in the 45th minute. This time Falque played the ball into Obika and he set it perfectly for Parker to find the bottom corner from 16 yards.

Lawrence Vigouroux made his first save of note in injury time, palming away Marc Albrighton's shot down to his right. Johnson followed up from 25 yards, his dipping effort grazing the top of the net.

Into the second half and we looked to have got in twice in the opening five minutes without testing Hill, before Vigouroux made a fine save to his left to keep out Bowery's point-blank header. Massimo Luongo then defended superbly, a diving header to glance away a cross destined for Bowery in front of goal.

As Villa pushed on, so the gaps started to open up. We almost exploited that with two chances in a minute just before the hour. First, Barthram crossed deep and Falque cushioned his cross back for Obika to turn and shoot, his effort striking the crossbar.

Townsend then got away from Albrighton and fizzed in a cross to the near post met by Obika's diving header just wide.

Parker was replaced by Giancarlo Gallifuoco in the 68th minute, a double substitution that also marked the arrival of Souleymane Coulibaly for Obika.

The next effort arrived a minute later as Mason connected with a piledriver from 30 yards, tipped over by Hill.

It wasn't long before Townsend was off down the left again and this time it led to the third goal. Janoi Donacien tried to intercept, but could only divert the ball towards his own goal. Coulibaly made sure as the ball crept over the line.

Townsend was unstoppable now and a 70-yard run almost led to the goal of the night, his left-foot shot from 16 yards tipped over by Hill. The winger then cut in and set-up Falque, who curled over.

It was all Spurs now and Hill needed to be at his best to first deny Falque from 12 yards, Townsend from 25 yards and then somehow beat away a potential own goal from close range from Albrighton.

Interesting how Stewart who is a defender was on the bench and a right winger and defensive midfielder played in defence instead.

Good to see that our U21s continue to impress.

I notice that BAE didn't feature last night, is there another reserve game for him to play in this week to help him regain match sharpness?

There's nothing planned at the moment but the Spurs XI team often have unannounced matches played behind closed doors, especially when we have players coming back from long-term injuries.

Good to see our u21s continue to do so well. Great idea this new format.

Interestingly, Kane played for Norwich's u21s last night as well, and netted twice, as he comes back from injury. The other scorer for Norwich caught my eye too - Olumide Durojaiye, who came through our ranks. I think Ramil Sheriff is playing at the canaries now too.

ACADEMY ON FA YOUTH CUP TRAIL

Our Academy team begin their FA Youth Cup campaign with a third round tie at Cheltenham Town tonight.

Cheltenham play in the South-West Division of the Football League Youth Alliance and beat Maidenhead 8-0 and AFC Wimbledon 5-2 to reach the third round.

We kick-off at Whaddon Road at 7pm with the tie decided on the night and the winners facing a trip to West Ham in round four.

“There is a lot of history and tradition attached to the FA Youth Cup,” said Academy Manager, John McDermott.

“Sometimes it’s possibly over-hyped by people, but whether it’s Tottenham, Liverpool, Burnley or Cheltenham, every team wants to do well in this competition.

"For the First Years, it’s their first opportunity at this competition they’ve heard so much about and for the Second Years, it’s last-chance saloon.

“Is it the toughest competition? I’d argue that some of the international tournaments we go to are tougher, but in terms of opportunities for the lads to showcase their talents, it’s vitally important.”

John was quick to stress that the Academy shouldn’t just be judged on how they perform in the FA Youth Cup.

“Clubs can win it and not necessarily produce more players than teams that go out in the third round,” he explained.

“I was talking to Steven Caulker about it and he went out in the third round at Port Vale in a team that included Jake Livermore and Andros Townsend. So it always has to be seen in context.

“That’s not an excuse, because we want to do well. If we win, we’ll have the chance to go and play West Ham at Upton Park and then hopefully play at White Hart Lane.”

John expects a tough test from Cheltenham. “We go from playing against the likes of Barcelona and Anderlecht in the NextGen to Cheltenham, the first time we’ve played them and they will want to turn us over.

“It’s a huge incentive for them. They know they are not playing against Gallas, Caulker, Bale, Defoe and Adebayor, they are playing against lads from North London who are in the same position as them, trying to get somewhere in the game.

“We have to go there, try to impose our style on the game and it will be a real test of our toughness.”

What's Sherwood up to these days? And anyone care to explain how many coaches we have at how many levels?

As the first half of the season draws to a close, I think it's worth a look at how our various youth teams have done.

U18 Academy Premier League & FA Youth Cup

Finished 3rd in National Group 2 some way behind both Southampton & Manchester United. Through to 4th Round of FA Youth Cup away to West Ham United.

U19 NextGen Series

Finished 3rd in Group 1 and qualified for Knock-Out Phase Round of 16 in 2013.

U21 Premier League

Won Group 2 ahead of Manchester United & Southampton and qualified for Elite Group in 2013.

Essentially the same team that played in U-18 league, FA Youth Cup and NextGen. Not a bad first half.

SPURS LOAN WATCH:

Harry Kane scored on his return to action for Norwich City Under-21s on Monday.

The young striker - on loan at Carrow Road this season - had been sidelined since September with an ankle injury but was back with a bang as the Canaries beat the Hammers 3-1 in the Barclays U21 Premier League.

Kane struck the post before opening the scoring in the first half, was then upended for a penalty converted by Olumide Durojaiye before tapping home his second and Norwich's third.

He had made only two appearances for the Canaries before his injury.

Adam Smith played another 90-minute shift for Millwall in Tuesday night's 2-2 draw at Brighton in the Championship. The Lions led 2-0 before Gus Poyet's men struck back in the second half.

Away from the UK, Bongani Khumalo played 90 minutes as PAOK beat Giannina 3-1 in the Greek Super League on Monday night. POAK remain second, eight points behind Olympiacos.

WEEKEND ACTION

Adam Smith completed another 90-minute shift as the Lions beat Leicester City 1-0 at the New Den on Saturday to move back into the play-off places in the Championship.

Jordan Archer is also enjoying a successful loan spell in League Two at Wycombe and helped the Chairboys make it five matches unbeaten with a 2-0 win at Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

As well as the clean sheet, Jordan set-up one of the best chances of the game, his long clearance sent Bruno Andrade through on goal, but he was denied one-on-one by Stanley goalkeeper Paul Rachubka.

Meanwhile, John Bostock was an unused substitute as Swindon beat Oldham 2-0 in League One.
