I read a book years ago about Brazilian football which touched on this - one of their biggest national exports is/was footballers

Oh well, he did say he didn't understand why we were buying Veliz when he did so maybe his radar has been corrected haha
 
If we take it that Udogie is our main man at LB then a promising youngster or a 30+ experienced player is the likely choices for a back up. One option has long term potential, the other safety and reliability.

If you think there is a third option of signing someone of equal profile to Udogie, to push him or whatever, you're living in cloud cuckoo land due to our current position and said player thinking the club appear not only to be struggling, and given those circumstances, I'm also battling it out with a high quality player for a starting spot...is that overall really worth it for my career?

Paulinho was a good player that just couldn't cope with the physicality of English football. He genuinely looked scared of being clattered every time he was on or near the ball. I think that sort of thing is difficult to know when scouting a player from another league where the football is played at a slower pace with far less physicality and violence. Some players who don't like it at first and look terrible adapt to it (Pires is a good example) while others don't have the bravery to adapt or, perhaps better put, the will to adapt and instead just immediately decide that they'll instead just transfer to a less physical league.

One of the things that I like about Xavi Simmons is that, while clearly the pace and physicality of this league has surprised him, he looks to me as though he wants to adapt to that and be a success here. He still wants the ball, is prepared to keep the ball and get clattered and also wants to go in for tackles himself. The opposite of what I saw from Paulinho

Tim Vicory. I've never heard him say a single negative thing or caveat to a player linked from S America ever. Made career out of proclaiming the next big thing on players heading to Europe, when few end up being anything special. Maybe that is just him and scouts seeing potential and players not developing...?

I stopped listening to the noise around football about 7/8 years ago (my grandson keeps me updated despite my scepticism) but I clearly remember Vickory having reservations about certain players from South America.

If he isn’t going to play here straight away then he needs to go on loan to Spain. South American youngsters learning their trade in Spain has been a proven strategy.

I imagine he will be playing soon enough with Udogie still injured. Just like Bergvall, Gray, Kinsky and Tel all did at the same age.

Has a player of ours ever had a good loan? In terms of sharpening them for us (rather than as a shop window to sell on). Since Walker to Villa and Rose to Sunderland anyway.

Whilst his loans themselves weren't numerically successful I think Harry developed a hell of a lot from his various loans.

I don't think anyone said that Moura, Sandro, Veliz, Vinícius, Gilberto, Bentancur, Royal etc where among the best in the world.

In fact, Who are those players who were labelled as one of the best in the world?
