Roberto De Zerbi *OFFICIAL*

I wish he would too, but I'm not sure these players are fit enough for that. Sometimes, you reach a conclusion and you see everything through that lense, but I the lack of movement has been a huge problem all season. The lack of passing ability hasn't helped but if you look at the games, we hardly ever pass it to a moving player which, in turn, makes it even more difficult for them to beat their man.

We're slow and static, which leads to more backwards and sideways passing. It also gives the impression that the players are lazy when, in fact, they might be unfit.

I wouldn't bet the house on it, but it's a feeling I've had all season.

The attacking/creative players available this season are really poor/non-existent - when will people realise this is what has forced our hand wrt attacking play more than anything else?

Yeah this guy may be the right long term manager, I don’t know.

But I really don’t think he is the right short term manager.

It’s another fúck up by agent VV and the Nepo babies.

Now some will say we were in decline for a while and there is an argument to be made for that

But Our decline since Levy was unceremoniously ousted has been biblical.

Maybe it really hurt? Maybe it was knowing he wouldn't be able to contribute to the next 6 games that really upset him?

Tbh I don’t really care what it was. It was not the reaction of the kind of leader needed in our situation. Making continued excuses for these players over two years has partly got us to this point. I’ve given up now on 90% of them.

Sometimes it looks like captains are chosen as some kind of honorary title. To me, a captain has a distinct role, both communicative and motivational. I don't care if someone is the most senior or has been at the club the longest, or even if he's nowhere near the best player in the team, as long as he's one of the most consistent. It certainly helps if a senior player has the required attributes, but that's not a must for me. I am also opposed to having strikers and keepers as captains, but that's a discussion for another time.

Summed up, I see the captain as an extension of the manager on the pitch.

I always thought Romero was a terrible choice.

He has prioritised his international responsibilities over his club ones since the day her arrived; he is unreliable and temperamental; he offers little in leadership on the pitch; and he vastly overrates his own ability.

Another I’ll be very glad to see gone come the summer.

Add to that, he's enjoying very little respect from the referees, not one or two, but most of them.

But, but he did the huddle in front of our fans in Bilbao…. (In fairness that was actually a good move).

I don’t quite understand how he watched us under Frank and Tudor and thought “yeah let’s keep playing like that.” I understand his point on keeping things simple, not changing too much but surely at this point we need it.

It’s only one game and normally I would not draw conclusions like this, but when you only have 7 of them setting a standard early is crucial.

I hope we change tact and go high press, high energy vs Brighton.
This is the one worry I have with RdZ and I'm not sure what the answer is.

The story is that he won't implement his full principles and style until pre-season because it's complicated and players take time to digest it. I don't know how a manager goes in and does something which is not fully what they believe in. How does a club have confidence that they can get an expected result if you aren't fully getting from the manager what brought him to your attention in the first place. Hopefully it's possible.

I did think the line-up was fairly straightforward yesterday. When I looked at the team sheet, I didn't have to guess who would be playing where - it was refreshingly obvious (albeit not the 11 I'd have liked - Richie and RKM being my two biggest worries. Maybe Gallagher too). I thought there were some good signs first half (particularly first 10 minutes) but after that, we reverted to type.

I actually don't agree. The best managers plot a journey to their go-to tactics. They don't just rock up and implement them day one. It's an evolution based on a number of things including training ground and transfer strategy. It can often start from the academy upwards as well.

I think RDZ is trying to extract the pragmatic pieces of his tactics and get some of them in place from day 1. Formation would be the obvious one. Then he has a platform to build upon.

You may have a point but think you’ll find that he rocked up to Brighton and implemented day 1 to the extent that the players, according to Lewis Dunk, said it was very difficult and the players were confused for the first few weeks.

Ange also rocked up here day 1 and went hell for leather with his style.

You can't write De Zerbi off after one game.
You need to wait for two games.

There’s a reason Sunderland and Brentford are having above par seasons.

Obviously we would never have signed Xhaka but I thought there was a case for bringing in Henderson which I posted on here at the time.

We are bereft of any on field leadership/marshall - or even someone that holds favour with refs. We’ve also had no consistency at all in that area of the pitch so he would have got plenty of games.

A good captain gets 10/20% out of everyone else.

That does not fit the agenda of some mate.

'Agenda' is the perfect word. It's a long, long cry from the days when Ricky walked around the pitch at Wembley having been subbed and had a poor game yet was serenaded with 'One Ricky Villa'...to then have 'that' performance in the replay!!!!! The electricity of pure, raw, tribalistic support during those years was incredible wasn't it...

I agree.
I think there's still a need for those sorts of players, and was surprised Frank didn't earmark that. Henderson would've been great, and when Sunderland signed Xhaka I was impressed. I always thought the way the goons jumped on him was silliness; he annoyed me tremendously, a bit of the Gus Poyets about him in some senses, but he's such an important player. I believe Ange called out wanting more experience last season, but our 'policy' wouldn't go there!!!!!

Considering their policy revolves solely around the pound note, I wonder what they’re thinking now.

I think De Zerbi has to throw his lot in with Xavi at this point. He has to pump this guy up, tell him he's the man, and direct as much traffic as possible through him. Quick passes into him. Fast, snappy recoveries if we lose the ball. Get Tel and Xavi as close together as possible in positions behind the CF. Play Spence on the right. If we keep doing what we're doing we're pretty certain to down. Romero's injury changes what we can do from the back. It's time to roll the dare is to do dice and work on the confidence of the few players who CAN create...
