Racism in football

You think we'll end racism through name calling and belittling people? By calling me racist when I haven't made a single bigoted comment?
You did enter the discussion by saying :
“Says the most cowardly, bigoted, deflecting bully on this board.“

Let’s not forget this is not the general politics thread, this is specifically about racism in football. A player has been called a monkey and @veryoldspur has downplayed it (to put it nicely) and called it insignificant. Calling out such a view is not bullying - even more so when being called out by someone who has experienced iracism throughout their life.

You are right that we all need to be tolerant and should be mindful of how we post. But if challenging racism (which is exactly what said poster is displaying) leads to what you call a pile-on, then I take that as a compliment.

Says the most cowardly, bigoted, deflecting bully on this board.

The pile-ons on this board are disgusting and you're often the ringleader. Try to recognise that people are emotional, that we all have different life experiences and we all face different challenges. Read between the lines, take off the blinkers that we all have at times and rather than jump to conclusions about an individual, engage with them. Recognise that your words may affect that faceless 'keyboard warrior' and consider whether or not you want to be that person that pushes someone over the edge.

There was a time not too many years ago when our shared love of Spurs gave us grounding for tolerant and engaging conversation, a shared experience that highlighted our similarities rather than our differences and brought people that otherwise probably wouldn't engage with one another together. Let's try to get back to that.

I am personally very studied in those senses, and rarely post in these sorts of threads as a consequence. I have often tried to engage with people here of differing opinions. Some want the discussion, others aren’t interested. I find your comments about ‘jumping to conclusions’ and ‘words’ possibly affecting someone and pushing them over the edge to be ironic in the frame of specific comments being made regarding a poster whose very issue is the ‘importance’ given to ‘hurty words’ (their phrase not mine). You took a giant swing at someone (Luton) who has been effectively singled out on this forum by some simply because of his ethnicity, told their perspective is totally wrong, and who has endured plenty of assumptions. You talk about ‘bullies’…maybe we have a different definition, but bullies by and large go for those who cannot defend themselves or are not interested in trying to out of fear. I think it is fair to say that the person Luton engaged with was absolutely aware of what might come in terms of response.

If you really, really believe the last bold-facd sentence, maybe hold your hands up for your part here and move on.

Sorry but you’re ignorant and a fool.

Things you have related to using racist language so far:

Doing 35 in a 30
Littering
Shop lifting

Play “what about” is pointless here. Shoplifting, speeding and littering are all in their own way offences that can cause their own version of harm. Treating someone differently or calling them names or abusing them is racism.

The fact that you can’t understand that you condone racism with this attitude means you’re either a massive bigot, have led a sheltered life and can never understand what being a victim of racism feels like, or you’re trolling people for the reaction that I’m probably giving you.

You probably don’t actually know what woke really even means, you just use it as a term to say “I wouldn’t be offended by that so if you are it’s because you’re ‘woke’”.

You’re right not everything everyone gets offended by is a problem. But racism is, no one should be treated differently or given abuse over the colour of their skin.

You say you don’t condone it, yet all of your actions and words show that you do. You don’t care about racist abuse and you use the words GB news have taught you to make out that if you think racism is a problem you’re probably just a bit soft.

It’s ignorant.
As mentioned I post on a politics forum, and another member started a thread about weak minded people getting offended. I have copied and posted my reply below
Two things come to mind, you can not give offence, it can only be taken, and nobody has the right not to be offended.

I am totally fed up with wimps who start getting offended by what they consider hurty words. What ever happened to sticks and stones. What's even worse is when people get offended on other people's behalves. I belong to a football forum, and the subject of racism in football came up. I dared to say that there is no genuine racism in football , and if one player calls another player a hurty word then there are far more serious things in life to worry about, and you should have seen the comments come flying back. Apparently that makes me a racist and a bigot, and it would appear I may have offended some of the lefty wokes on the forum. Honestly, you couldn't make it up.

Of course you can give offence. You manage to do so pretty well. Deliberately so I believe.

All this does is prove you’re an ignorant old dinosaur who is stuck in the past.

Calling racism ‘hurty words’ shows you don’t have the required intelligence to understand it. This doesn’t make you the tough character you want it to. It makes you an ignorant idiot.

It isn’t weak minded to be offended by racism, it’s weak minded to condone it like you do.

All you have is “you don’t agree with me you must be a lefty” no, not a lefty, I just feel it’s 2026 and we don’t need racism anymore, your minimising of it just shows you haven’t the capacity to think about things like an adult. Embarrassing at your age.

Lefty and woke, confirmed. Just a guess, do you vote for mad Zac?

Statement about more hurty words.

Show Racism the Red Card are extremely disappointed, but sadly not surprised, to learn that at least six professional footballers from England and Scotland received yet more racist abuse online following participation in games this weekend.

Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana and Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri were both sent messages via the Instagram platform on Saturday, with both players expressing their disbelief that that individuals still have the opportunity and motivation to send hateful messages without impunity in 2026.

Then, on Sunday, Wolves’ Tolu Arokodare and Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle became the latest Premier League players to be sent racist abuse on social media.

“It’s still unbelievable to me that we’re playing in a time where people have so much freedom to communicate such racism without any consequences,” wrote Arokodare on his Instagram story.

“These individuals should have no place in our game and collectively we have to take action to punish everyone who taints the sport like this, no matter who they are.”

In Scotland, Rangers players Emmanuel Fernandez and Djeidi Gassama both shared screen shots of messages sent to them on Instagram following the team’s 2-2 draw with Livingston on Sunday, with both players calling out the actions of those using the platform to send abuse, with comments on recent posts made by the players including multiple monkey emojis.

When racism and prejudice become normalised within society, there are consequences for everyone. The racist messages and behaviours targeted at these young men over the weekend mirror hateful messages being posted online with a rapidly increasing frequency, irrespective of the stories being shared. When racism occurs within football, it is only ever a mirror to the existence of the issue within wider society, and therefore, the solutions need to be considered holistically.

This is not a football problem. It is a societal problem.

Show Racism the Red Card agree with Hannibal Mejbri, who admirably called for people to educate themselves and their children in the face of the racism he received. Education is the key to tackling the normalisation and increase in the expression of racist ideas and attitudes, both online and in interpersonal situations, and people must be given the opportunity to learn about the development of racism and the impact that it has on individuals and whole communities. Within this, the consequences for such behaviour can also be addressed.

Once again, Show Racism the Red Card calls on the Government and on the social media platforms themselves to bring in greater regulation, including tools to prevent the sharing of such hate-filled messages, in order that individuals who would be the target can be better protected, but education must be prioritised alongside this, while more effective punishments are also considered.

We implore all individuals to stop and consider the impact of their behaviour online, and the contribution that this makes to further normalising racist actions. There are no excuses. Too many lives are already being negatively impacted by racism so far this year alone, and this will continue without a greater concentration of collective and meaningful action – both online and within communities themselves.

Exactly, someone’s doing 35 in a 30 somewhere.

Now why is calling a person a clam less offensive than calling a black person a derogatory word?

The issue I have with questions such as this is that you are wholly disinterested in a discussion.
Your mind is set where it is. You are obviously aware that to many of us, it is an unpalatable one; all good, each to their own and we move on.
Except you want to continue to engage and poke and wind people up. No amount of counter-opinion or explanation is going to give you a moment of epiphany is it; be honest. So I can only conclude that -
A) you’re bored
B) you’re actively (and I mean ACTIVELY trolling)
C) you’re bored and a troll.

I could call you a clam. Based on this side of yourself which you offer, I’d feel perfectly comfortable doing so. But I don’t know you. For all I know, you could be one of the world’s great philanthropists who gives hundreds of thousands to homeless charities and various foreign aid organisations; which would, IMO, make you suddenly the opposite of a clam.

However, you only choose to present a single side of yourself here. I mean my friend, you have a choice. You could offer your opinion and then step back and move on. Instead you pick and poke and provoke and double down and triple down. You HAVE a choice.

Do you think a black kid has as big a choice? Before they even step out of the door, there are groups of people who are going to judge them on the colour of their skin based on a series of tropes and ignorances which mean that if they are wearing, say, a deep-hooded sweatshirt and baggy jeans in (let’s say) Shepherd’s Bush, they will immediately be judged by some people. In some cases, they run the risk of being insulted. Daily. Every day. It isn’t something they have a choice over. And one of the reasons for that is the disregard ‘people’ like you have for the harm language and stereotypes cause.

You also seem to enjoy moving goalposts. You raised the issue of anti-semitism. IF you want to discuss that, IMO you should be making it a seperate discussion, unless you lack the intellectual capacity to understand that it is possible to find racist language and behaviour abhorrent AND anti-semitism, and that isn’t a ‘pick one, fudge the other’ situation for most people.

So from where I am, you have a choice about how you present yourself here. And right now you do not appear to have an issue with racist language, especially when it involves black players. You see where this is going, right?

And if you only choose very specific angles, then inevitably, you will be judged on those.
It is YOUR choice, no-one elses…

P.S…the last time I posted something this long and of this nature to a (former it appears) member of this forum, the reply I got was filled with all this ‘lefty’ and ‘woke’ rubbish, which confirmed for me that they were not interested in conversation, only in disagreement and double-downing on their own (IMO) increasingly troubling mono-view of the world. There are MANY issues today; it is my view that you do not have to just ‘pick one’, you can see several (and in some cases, I would agree that ‘over-correction’ since the covid era has contributed to an upscaling of many issues). And FWIW, whenever at games (it has been this way for decades) if I hear someone use racist language, I call them out; loudly.
