Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

Great story, good for listening to your core self.
I think some people are wired on the money over time stuff, and that's all good/their prerogative and sensibility. I was always in the time over money category, I'm not sure it was a choice more than had I done it the other way around I think my unhappiness would've been enormous and quite self-destructive. I have to say, I'm delighted with how it's all turned out. Again, amen for not being afraid and actually well done for getting to stuff the coffers whilst you had raw youth on your side and in your system!!!
Yes, I was lucky enough to be in a position to change tack. Most are not. And even some who are wealthy don't seem to see it as an opportunity to dial back, and actually do the stuff that makes them happy. This I truly don't understand. We are all wired differently, I suppose.

I understand this viewpoint Rob, because it is one I shared not that long ago. Getting paid well, climbing the corporate ladder, and using that wealth accumulated to buy loads of stuff. It sounds like the path to happiness. That is what I thought I wanted too for a while, but now I am on a different path.

I am generous too, but with with my time and emotion. I feel free as I am not as tied to deadlines or profit targets. And I am lucky in that I am in good place financially, I understand everyone is not like that, but I have no desire to get rich. None. I could earn double what I do, but it would come with double the hassle. fudge that.

This might come off as unambitious. It is. Let me recommend an old article called medium chill by David Roberts if you want to get my vibe.

No we’re more in sync than what you think here. To be clear I definitely agree that the buying loads of stuff part is over rated.

Seems like we are in a similar place where you have the ability to not be tied to deadlines and profit targets. I still have a corporate job but I personally enjoy it but if it ever got to the point where I didn’t I could pack it in. But without having a degree of financial freedom we would still have to be chasing it even if we do live within our means and have less material desires.

Glad to hear it Rob. Your aspiration should be to do as little work as possible and substitute that time with the good stuff.

As a final parting shot, now that I have softened you up, I will say that almost everyone in America are immigrants. Except for Native Americans, everyone is bouncing around from just a few generations back. American culture is a hodgepodge of every culture on the planet. This is its strength, and not something that should be attacked. Immigration is the story of humankind, so don't be so quick to cast people as others. That might be you someday.
Yes I've had wine. ;)

Should aspire to do whatever makes you happy. I still enjoy my job for the most part but it’s certainly not hard work. And good times do cost money. Wasn’t cheap getting to Bilbao from Las Vegas at 3 weeks notice as an example.

I’m not against immigration. I am an immigrant myself and I can acknowledge the multicultural origins of the United States while still arguing for limits and rules on immigration in 2026.

I think the majority do.

But there is a noisy minority who get the attention.

I think politics, and politicians, should be boring, I think its a good thing, that mostly, this government haven't come out and punched us in the face like their predecessors did since 2016. I think thats what most people want, don't fudge with us, look after the economy and don't embarrass us internationally.

Majority don't even need to. Not in this fptp with bizarre constituency lines.

Yes I look at the emptiness of Russia today and wonder how long it will be before we see a biblical settlement of those lands from those who live cheek by jowl in Africa and Asia.
And Russias ‘native’ Population is shrinking fast.

So all the talk of change, the grown ups are back in charge, things will be cleaned up etc isn't working out as planned - they've been every bit as bad as previous governments with continual sleaze, corruption and scandal. Politicians really are all the same - not seen anything to disprove that statement (so far). Would love to be proven wrong.

James OBrien with his grown up comments looks a right bellend. Deservedly.

Exactly, and the reason I never vote - they all speak nonsense and there is no one I truly believe in from any party.

What I will say is this thread is funny - You barely hear a whisper on here when each and every latest Labour scandal and balls up occurs, it's almost like it hasn't happened - yet when the Tories were in charge posters couldn't wait to get on here and whinge about it all.

Labour have been as expected a complete and utter failure with a weak leader in charge who will doubtlessly soon be replaced by someone equally as inept.....

Starmer has been a disaster, no two ways about it.

NO one has defended them either, so had you bothered to say it before now and laid it on, no one would have disagreed...........

What I'm saying is the minute any of the Tories did anything wrong when in charge there were/are posts with links to the news and how outrageous it all is. Yet Labour in charge and you don't get any of that on here, the difference is stark. And actually when @WillWeEverBeGoodAgain posts anything on the subject there is barely any uptake at all in comparison to the pile on when Tory related.

I have no skin in the game not being aligned to any party, just an observation :) ....

I suppose its natural when you oversea Covid and Brexit, two of the greatest news stories of the last decade, it was similar when Blair oversaw Iraq on here.

Not sure you find any Labour fans on here currently
