It's not VAR....all it did was give a referee the chance to rectify his original tinkle poor decision. A chance referees never had before.

He doubled down and should never ref in the prem again as a consequence.

Exactly. He's literally watching a slow motion replay showing he made a mistake.
...then still gives it.

I think the players complaining beforehand hurt his ego and so he just ignored the replay.
