Not that I'm bitter...

I have only ever seen this once and I’d had a few…. However, my over riding memory of the ref is that he had the whistle in his mouth in milliseconds and it was almost as though he was relieved to make such a big decision so early. I believe that fledgling VAR did what it still does as well: back up its mate the ref.

It was the ref telling Hugo about the new rules that convinced me they were out to do us.

Using the "clear and obvious" determination over the laws has been the biggest failure in VAR.

Haven’t ever rewatched this, as at the time it was unbelievable and heartbreaking to get done over by the ref so early in the game.

So, thanks for the reminder I guess :)

In a way it’s useful we don’t forget this, wish we had a manager who would reel off a list of dodgy ref decisions next time one goes against us and just call them out as corrupt (what’s the worst that can happen? A fine? That’s nothing really)

Liverpool still aren't over the Diaz disallowed goal in our win in 2023. If the "handball" had happened to them they'd be writing ballads and books about it. I don't think we've gotten a decision against them since.

apart from the var miscommunication - did cost them that one.

As long term members of this forum may remember that was my wedding day...I delayed the Cake cutting and first dance for the start of the Final (on a TV and satellite receiver that I'd gone to some lengths to make sure was installed and in place at the venue!) - it seemed so obvious that it was never a handball and as I was being beckoned back into the main room I was assuming that VAR would intervene; alas the next sound I heard from the back room was the half dozen or so Liverpool fans cheering (in, to be fair a muted manner) the penalty conversion.

I did watch most of the second half but as a result of what else was going on for me that day (and it was genuinely one of the best days of my life) I have never felt the same emotional battering that I know all of the rest of you have...much like the 87 Cup Final which I was too young to have built up any sort of emotional investment for being only 6 years old at the time!

Good post though @thfcsteff - we really must do that 'Greatest injustices against Spurs' episode to compare this with some of the others!

What annoys me is that people would rag on Sissoko for the heinous act of pointing when all
of their anger should have been dedicated to the nonsense rule and the idiotic officials who enforced it.

I’ll remember this day … but in my heart I know that we should have kept Dembele for the rest of the season even if it was to play just one game. Not blaming Sissoko he was an animal getting us to that final.

I remember being in Islington watching the game and as I’ve gone out to get some fresh air, I came back to the packed bar and some Liverpool fan casually sat on my bar stool and when asked to get up he kissed his teeth at me and turned around like I wasn’t there. I then told him politely to get up before it gets messy. The bar tender called security and threw the lad out. He was giving the slit throat sigh through the window while I drank his freshly poured beer. That was the only highlight of the day.

Issue is that he wouldn’t have been wheeled out for just a single game. Would have played in some key Prem of the UCL knockouts prior to that and his body could no longer cope with the top level intensity. We saw it with Wanyama as well. Both went to retirement leagues.

Annoying. We were the best team by far as well. Liverpool barely had anything.

Were we? Don’t remember us creating much outside of a Vertonghen chance and Eriksen free kick.

I’ve never even watched the highlights back though. Too painful.
