New Captain Poll

Who should get the armband for 26/27?

Archie 'Perryman' Gray for me. I think give it to a young guy with the right character and let him grow into it, and do it for a decade

Porro as vice, as he'll likely be on the pitch more than the others with the suitable character
 
Part of my experience of playing reflects De Zerbi's comments about Ben Davies yesterday. Giving the captaincy to an older leader can be pointless - it doesn't change anything. They'd do the same role/contribute the same anyway. But giving it to an emerging leader can give them a 20% boost, which pays back to the team overall
 
When selecting a captain I believe you should be looking for someone who the manager trust to be his voice on the field and will be playing regularly plus have the respect of their teammates. A captain should be the link between the players and the manager. They don't have to be the best or star player.
I think we do not have many candidates that tick that criteria, Porro is the only player who has managed to play regularly, I don't get the feeling that he's always switched on in games.
I prefer midfield or defenders to be captains, imo none of our defenders currently fit the role, Gray I believe is too young and it's a great responsibility to burden him with at this stage of his development, I would opt for Maddison when fit, der Ven if he's on board with manager or as an outsider Tonali, Grays time will come if he fulfils his potential.

I'm not sure van de Ven crossed my mind as a candidate. From the outside he comes across as a bit petulant and selfish. This might change as he matures, but he doesn't seem to have that same generosity to guiding others that other (even younger) individuals like Gray and Tel do

A reasoned response until you mentioned Tel.

I didn't see any evidence of him trying to drag others with him last season and he like Gray has enough on his plate developing his own game, playing him out wide isolates him from most of the action on the park.

Think RDZ is not wrong when he says VDV is a sensitive guy. You can see it in his face when the game is going sideways for him.
Definitely not ready to be captain atm.

Why give it to someone who is not going to be playing regularly?
 
I think it will be Maddison but only if he is fit enough to start the season. Voted for him on the basis he will be.
If not, VDV.
Porro and Robertson as VCs (VDV taking one of those slots as vc if not captain).

Edit to say I think both Maddison and Robertson have the right characters to be in the ear of the referee during games.
