Moving Abroad

Seeing as its came up on another thread and I know some on here have moved abroad or like me are thinking of it, would love to hear any stories of why? how its been? Cultural changes? Pitfalls? Plus points etc etc

As mentioned elsewhere seriously considering Cambodia, in particular Siem Reap as it has turned into a really cool and cosmopolitan city, great expat community and the value for money is insane. I accept somewhere becomes "the norm" over time like it does here, but still, change of scene might be needed.

I've lived in Japan for more than 8 years...the best thing that I ever did. I also lived in Toronto for 2 years around 18/19 and then again 23 years old. I think living overseas in your youth should be a requirement. There's nothing like the challenges you get when you're far from home.

Loved living in Toronto, such a cool city

It was so much fun in the mid-late 2000s (I first moved there in 2006). Absolutely loved living there. Every time I go back now I'm glad I left though. The city still feels like it's 2006. Transport hasn't moved on whatsoever, despite a major population increase and housing is ridiculously expensive.

I holidayed in Toronto with family in the early 80s and had a chance to move there late teens in the mid 80s and didn't take it.
Loved it and have always wanted to go back, would have considered retiring there but housing is maddeningly expensive.

Great thread.
Approaching 60 now and it's always been our plan to move to somewhere with a better lifestyle and climate.
We've planned for this financially for over 30 years and now it's getting closer it's exciting and terrifying in equal measures.
Leaving Glasgow on Friday morning to drive to Spain for two weeks for some R&R but also scope out some areas and villas.
Will post on the thread how we get on.

Will you keep your property in Scotland or sell it? No need to answer that if you don't want (I am nosey)

We want to move if reform of restore come in to power. But there's a massive privilege for my family that we have land and we'll built property back in Pakistani Kashmir.

But the issue is, it isn't home. I can't imagine living any where but here.

Ideally if we had the money I'd look at the far east too though. Malaysia is one I'd love.

Wherever you are considering moving, you should assess the climate projections of your intended destination. There is a bit of sun, which we all enjoy, and then there is relentless heat.

Easily one of the worst parts of Japan. From mid-June til the end of September, it doesn't go below 25°. Not at even at 3am. Just a relentless 25-40°, with 75% humidity on top. Living in air con for 4 months and it's brutal.

So true.
Our great wish is travel.
Spain will be our base for the large part of the year, but during the hottest part of the year we will travel up into Central Europe revisiting all our favourite places, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, London etc, while exploring and having new adventures in places we have always wanted to go. Really want to do America as well but that's not looking so appealing atm.

That sounds like a good plan, though I think London moved back to the UK from Europe at some point ;)

I have a similar plan in mind in a camper van down the road, but without the moving bit. The weather here suits my clothes (and skin).

My Dad had a 5 year all inclusive holiday in North Africa, Italy and North Wales and he said it made a man of him.

They'll be back when the sensible people are back in charge.
I can see the attractions of the motor home, that sense of freedom must be great.

That sounds awesome, we've debated it but not decided anything yet. Only early 40's but you do need to plan in advance, I love the idea of being abroad somewhere with better weather and playing golf all day but realistically I'm not sure if I might get bored once the initial period is over especially if you don't know anyone out there, I'm a fairly quiet person so not really likely to meet loads of new people to keep my social life busy.

I like think I'd be happy watching football, reading and playing golf all day but see how things go, would like to be nearer my kids as well but who know where they'll end up living.

Other than the kids that sounds a lot like us.
Just want somewhere quiet, a bit of land around us, a house big enough to have friends and family come and stay and generally be on our own clock.

While very far removed from Cambodia.. I left the UK in 2010 for Prague and while I miss the closeness of my family and childhood friends I would not change it at all.

It was concerning at first as I'd up'n'left the UK after taking redundancy from my job of 16yrs to nothing in Cz, but it all worked out in the end and I'm in my 16th year of the current job.

Czech is an awful language to get to grips with and the centre thesedays is overflowing with bloody tourists, so much so that aside from appointments or passing through I can't think how many times in the last ten years I've been there - these I'd put as my main pit falls because the systems here can be very frustrating at times cos the government officials don't always want to speak English.

Plus sides - it isn't the UK. Central Europe, connected to everything with ease, and as I have perm residancy then I miss a few shortcomings of Brexit.

One day I may get back to Blighty, the Highlands (homeland) still call but I think maybe once my lad is older.
