Mathys Tel

Not the way I remember it at Saints actually. I though their left side was Bale (LB) and Walcott (LM) originally.

I thought he exclusively played as a LB at Saints.

As you say, an entire career proved that he was better further up though.
Nominally his position was LB but he was never actually playing there. He did pretty much 0 defending and played very similarly to how we ended up playing him with Ekotto behind him.

Tel should have a watch of this Tzolis.

I don’t believe he has any more physical tools than Tel but he has two things. Good end product and great instinct to be in POMO areas as often as possible.

In fairness it was against Coventry and he is surrounded by clever players. This season will be the first Tel has had high quality fit and available around him.

I wonder what they are counting as a successful dribble because I don't recall him beating his man on the weekend ?
iirc he turned his man and fed robertson to cross for moore's miss and also made another run down the center for a short pass fernandez who fed moore for another 1v1 miss

tel is our most improved and ready young one, lots of progress year to year. was able to hold up the ball more than richy and mikey together.

I saw him do so at least three times.

Yup, I must admit some of the criticism about Tel has made me think I watched a different game. Did he score or assist? No. Was he actually quite good with the scraps he was given? Absolutely! He’s easily worth a spot in the squad and when whatever physical condition collectively we need to reach gets achieved, I think he’s gonna fly as long as he gets minutes.

and he didn’t lose the ball often either.

His defending is the poorest part of his game but I thought he gave Kayode, a player I rate, a tough test, especially with little support inside from Gallagher, Richy or Bergvall.

This is an important area for him to improve in for sure. He does not lack the desire or effort to contribute, just the specific skillset. I believe it is coachable.

Let's hope so. It was clearly not that coachable with Sonny. He could only press high. He didn't have a scooby about the rest of defending even as he crossed into his thirties. He couldn't select the right position or time to drop into. He didn't have an interest in tracking runners and he certainly never opened his mouth and worked with the other players around him. I'm just surprised Lloris didn't lose his stuff with him way more often.
