What a classy player,and what a waste of a career. Shame really I would have loved him at the Lane. One of footballs untapped talents.
 
One of the best Romanian footballers in history and, alongside Nicolae Dobrin (famous 1960s and 70s player, Real Madrid tried to transfer him for 2 millions dollars at the time), the most technically gifted. Had he been a little more serious about his career and a little less injury prone, people would have compared him with Ronaldo or Messi. In fact, his style is similar to Messi's but his position on the field is less advanced. More of a midfielder.
He played in Romania mostly, at Gloria Bistrita, FC Vaslui and now, Steaua and abroad at Panathinaikos and FC Utrecht. Just a few caps for the Romanian national team, as he wasn't part of the "gang".
Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill asked Romanian journalists where did they hide Sanmartean all this years, after last week's European qualifier. Lazio tried to transfer him a couple years ago and now Chievo is rumoured to be after him.
Search him on Youtube, you're in for a treat. Actually, search both him and Nicolae Dobrin.
