That ball looks like a fudging medicine ball. Im sure they were pretty heavy in those days too which impresses me more about these older players?

As someone else said, they were fine when they were dry but when wet they were a nightmare. We use to dubbin them to waterproof them, it didn't work, they'd soak up water, get stuck in the mud and don't even talk about heading the lace. Take all that into account, add in pitches that were usually replicas of The Somme and boots that make clogs look elegant and you get a sense of how unappreciated nowadays was the level of their skill and criminally underpaid they were.
