My simple analogy:

The Higgs field, which is made up of Higgs Boson particles, is very much like a free double pepperoni pizza with stuffed crust. Your average obese person will immediately stop moving and eat the pizza (your heavy quarks), whilst your average person will slow down to take a cursory glance. Skinny people with eating disorders will run past the pizza whilst telling themselves they're ugly (your very light particles). Whilst the crazy person smearing his own faeces over himself whilst running about in every direction and not even realizing the pizza is there is your massless proton.
