Harry Kane MBE

I think we need to be realistic with Kane. He may have a dip in form at some point. He's running his socks off and playing so well. But when he needs a rest, we need Ade and Soldado to step up - to Kane's level!

We've put up with exorbitantly expensive strikers firing blank after blank for the past two seasons yet as soon as Harry comes along and starts firing them in regularly all we read is how inadequate he is.

FFS!

Earlier in the season, when Kane scored that unfortunate late own goal against Sunderland which cost us the win, me and my 10yo nephew called him a donkey. But now he hardly looks like one. Instead, he looks more and more like a striker with a great future. It remains to be seen if he can continue his current goal run and go on to be a top class striker.

This has got to be one of the strangest criticisms ever. You and your 10yo Nephew called him a donkey for scoring an on goal, with the ball bouncing around in our area? Bizzare.

You are 100% right. Strikers are made by how they come through their first dip in form. I hope that everyone is patient and sticks with him when this happens.

I don't think he has put on that much bulk, maybe a bit, i'd say its more down to getting game time and gaining confidence from the manager believing in him. If you were a youngster just breaking into the team you'd be nervous about fukcing up a chance or playing a bad pass, especially in front of our crowd. Kane though just seems to have that inner natural confidence, he misses, he just keeps going til the next chance, his head doesn't drop..... you can't train that.

I am not sure he has put on more bulk, but rather the bulk he did have has been turned into muscle

Where is statman when we need him?

So assuming Kane can manage 6 more goals before end of season, how many strikers have we had hit 20 goals in a season in last 15 years?

Might be a good quality perspective, I can only think of that season when both Keane/Berbs did it ..

Are there any strikers that score better than 1 in 4, there can't be that many can there?

He's still learning the game and can only get better, wasn't Defoe something like a 1 in 7 or 8?

Costa and Cisse are the only PL forwards with a shot conversion rate better than 1 in 4 this season. Kane is scoring with the same % of shots as Lukaku and Pelle, not too shabby considering how little experience his has at this level compared to them.

Aguero 14 goals from 74 shots = 19%
Costa 12 from 45 = 27%
Austin 11 from 58 = 19%
Sanchez 9 from 43 = 21%
Pelle 8 from 66 = 12%
Bony 8 from 59 = 14%
Sakho 7 from 40 = 18%
Cisse 7 from 26 = 27%
van Persie 7 from 43 = 16%
Berahino 7 from 40 = 18%
Lukaku 6 from 49 = 12%
Rooney 6 from 34 = 18%
Giroud 5 from 21 = 24%
Kane 4 from 34 = 12%
Jelavic 4 in 31 = 13%
Crouch 4 from 29 = 14%

During Defoe' best season for us (in 2009/10) he scored 18 goals from 113 shots, which is a 16% conversion rate or about 1 in 6. Although in the 4 seasons after that he scored at a rate of just 1 in 10 (27 goals from 262 shots). His aggregate conversion rate over those 5 seasons is 12%, the same as Kane currently.

From my quick trawl through the stats, only 8 Tottenham players have managed to score 20+ goals in a season (in all comps) over the past quarter of a century.

Top scorers (PL goals):

2013/14: Ade 13 (10)
2012/13: Bale 26 (21)
2011/12: Ade 18 (17)
2010/11: VdV 15 (13)
2009/10: Defoe 24 (18)
2008/09: Bent 17 (12)
2007/08: Berbatov and Keane 23 (15)
2006/07: Berbatov 23 (12) Keane 22 (11)
2005/06: Keane 16 (16)
2004/05: Defoe 22 (13)
2003/04: Keane 14 (13)
2002/03: Keane 13 (13)
2001/02: Poyet 14 (10)
2000/01: Rebrov 12 (9)
1999/00: Iversen 17 (14)
1998/99: Iversen 13 (9)
1997/98: Klinsmann 9 (9); Ginola 9 (6)
1996/97: Sheringham 8 (7)
1995/96: Sheringham 24 (16); Armstrong 22 (15)
1994/95: Klinsmann 30 (20); Sheringham 23 (18)
1993/94: Sheringham 16 (14)
1992/93: Sheringham 28 (21)
1991/92: Lineker 35 (28)
1990/91: Lineker 19 (13) and Gazza 19 (7)

Imo he'll be fine because when he misses he keeps getting back in position and goes again for the next chance. He will have bad runs but I doubt he will be as fragile as soldado.

Also for people criticising his chance ratio - for me the important thing is that when he misses he mostly is making the keeper work or slightly miscues something. It's not like Soldado who is snatching at chances, rushing them or mis kicking the ball. Kane can improve in this area but when he does he miss, he misses well if that makes any sense?

I am not bothered that he misses some chances because the most encouraging sign is he always seems to make and create plenty of chances. No Striker is going to convert all the time Suarez is a good example of that. He would miss quite a few good chances but when you create 4 to 5 in a game you will put at least one away.
