I think it was Neil Webb who actually supplanted him in central midfield. Trevor Steven was an OK, hard-working wide player.

My point was not who supplanted Glenn, more the types of player we seemed to value more.

Yes, understood. Trevor Steven would never have been picked in place of Hoddle, because he was a wide forward, but he was reliable and workmanlike. Presumably, Webb was also regarded as more reliable and harder working than Hoddle, although I can't for the life of me think of one thing Webb did that Hoddle did not do as well or much, much* better; play fewer risky passes, maybe? Track back a bit more? We can be confident he wasn't a better substitute goalie ...

Strangely, France never dropped Platini for a more industrious hod-carrier (no pun intended) type player, and I think that was the correct decision.

* Add as many "muches" as you deem appropriate.

Absolutely this all day. It was the direct comparison at the time wasn't it. I'll tell you what's funny to me...looking back, he was actually a lot tougher and industrious than his long legs, tight shorts and gorgeous feet suggested. I come back to that crunching tackle on Waddock in the 82 CF Replay which set Robbo off on 'that' run.
