Former Player Appreciation Thread

yes from the start pretty much, he states "the tabloid media said we know you have been in therapy etc" so he had to put it out first. Scum.
Utter clams really
We have a thirst in society for bad news
It’s daft right but actually people live failure and negativity
And our press thrive off it
Look at Huw yesterday
They have no accountability but. An drive the worst behaviours

Your press is worse than ours but some of the highlights of ours in recent years was a journo doorstepping a parent who had lost a kid that day and a separate incident where another journo tricked a woman who had seen her husband, mother and 3 kids die when their car went off the end of a pier into getting into her house with other mourners to get a story.

Anyone who does that sort of stuff and thinks "that's just my job" are complete and utter clams. Absolute scum.

I assume your talking Irish press
Ours are just scum and hacks
Very little quality and plenty of drab quantity

Well done Gary Neville for giving him a 'media safe space' to say what HE wanted on his terms.

Yes, he'd like the story, but he was a footballer so I think there's a players code within that

Yeh i agree, im not a huge Neville fan but Dele obviously felt it was the best platform tonget his point over. Ive listened to it twice for me thats a huge take away and probably part of his journey, get the facts out there and control the narrative that's being controlled by others, proving in fact that the fear of showing your vulnerability is actually a much lesser evil than hiding and allowing crap to be written about you. Speaking about issues is in my opinion the major step yo any kind of recovery, he will feel a huge weight lifted and not to sound cheesy, today's the start of the rest of his life, there is nothing that can be said now that can harm him as the truth is now out and the reaction will be one of support and not shaming.

Go get em lad

As a conclusion to this all as I don't want to detract from what is an important thing about Dele, but I would love to think this might be a watershed moment for fans to get their heads out their own arses and think about what the truths might or at least reflect harder about what that might be before spouting bile based on weakly pieced together evidence from sources on social media. I have been on my soapbox a million times about a few facts not making every lie a truth and I really believe it, I also don't believe we own footballers or personalities to the level we believe we do in order to have the views we do, the whole paying the wages argument and fan rights in order to have some of the views we do is BS IMO. More empathy, more critical thinking, more rational thinking, less emotional driven agendas needed. Maybe we all, including myself learn more about humans with this

On YT vs. Twitter

I've just watched the first 5 minutes.
That's a man now, not a boy.
So happy for Dele that's he's reached this point.
Let's sing his name loud and with love.

Anyone that's posted in the Mental Health thread understands some of the journey - it's tough, but liberating.
I'm just really happy he's taken these steps!

He's at the right club to help him too. Dyche is exactly who he needs as a manager.

Re: spurs. Yeah, it sounds like he kept a lot inside. But also, don't we have sports psychologists?! It may be overly simplified, but it feels like we should have done more.

Re: the tabloids. Nah....not worth the breath

really incredible and sad listen. Wish him all the best.

the biggest take away though? he wasn't quite ready to make this statement but our fudging gutter press were gonna leak it, so he had to.

clams.
Nah, that's the smallest take away for me. Starve them of air. Treat them as the irrelevance they are. Focus on the issues of abuse, drugs activity, mental health support and fostering a supportive culture where it's ok to not be ok.

Just read the BBC article. Not an easy read. Sadly I’m not sure if he will ever be the player he was for us for 3 years under poch but hopefully he can regain some sort of form and still go on to have a half decent middle and end to his career. But most importantly, hope he can get his head right and improve his mental well-being. That should be any person’s number 1 priority. Reading stories like this just hits home for me how there is no such thing as karma and I don’t believe “everything happens for a reason”. People don’t get what they deserve they just get what they get.

The irony is....in the moment of standing up and facing your issues, the bravest act of all...you have to deal with the cesspit media bringing a whole bunch of other issues you just plain don't need in this moment. Sad.

Absolutely, but as I just said in the off topics, do we now have a responsibility to look at the agenda behind that and the potential misinformation and lay off, I think we do? For me absolutely, based on the person speaking from his own experiences thats all that should matter. I get the problem is people are not like that, but thats what these examples should offer people, behind the stories about humans and people are placing to much faith in the press in representing these people accurately and in fact, do we have a right to really know the real truths let alone cast judgements? Opinions are one thing, giving a view another, I am talking about people making definitive statements based on half truths or lies.

I'm getting a bit teary just reading some of the supportive comments he's getting through social media. I'll have to save watching the actual interview until later, else I'll be blubbing at my desk. But well done Dele for having the strength to speak openly, even if you were forced into it to get your side out there first.
It's all too easy to overlook the pressures young players have to deal with.

The problem is the modern 'tools' we have been given are the antithesis of those required to achieve those (your) objectives. Literally driving (humanity) in the other direction.

We probably had psychologists that the players could access as and when....but as Dele says when the time comes to really open your wounds and face the truth... no-one will drag that out of you...it'll be you yourself that takes that path
