Roma talk with Lamela agents

Roma are set to meet with the agents of Erik Lamela to discuss his future after interest from Tottenham.

The London club, who are in the process of selling Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, have informed the capital side of their desire to sign the Argentine.

Spurs, who have also been linked with Roma’s Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, are reportedly willing to hand over €35m for the 21-year-old.

Lamela, who Tottenham director Franco Baldini knows well, joined the Italian outfit in 2011 from River Plate for around €17m.

The left-sided attacker has scored 19 goals in 62 League games for the Giallorossi since his arrival – 15 of those came during the last campaign.

Sky Sport Italia claim that Lamela’s representatives, including his father, will touch down in Italy today.

Tottenham target Erik Lamela is set to hold emergency talks over his Roma future on Friday afternoon.

Roma fear one of their rising stars wants to leave Serie A and move to the Premier League.

Tottenham are aware of the situation and Andre Villas-Boas believes he can land Lamela by the end of the transfer window.

The Argentina international left River Plate in 2011 to move to Roma and he has flourished in Italy, leading to numerous enquiries.

Spurs are keen and Manchester United are also watching the 21-year-old's situation. Now Roma have arranged talks with the player to clarify his position - and the Serie A giants will desperately try to persuade Lamela to stay at the club.

So a curious little news nugget popped up today. It might be true or it might not. If true, it likely has implications for Roma's future: Tottenham is ready to quadruple Lamela's contract. 4x. Four. That's a lot. This means to approach the Lamela situation strictly from a financial position, Roma is going to have to offer Erik a substantially better contract to keep his agent - if not Erik himself - happy. (There is a grand difference between moving for a slight bump and setting yourself up for life with a 5-6y contract. One injury...) They're probably going to have to give him a new contract, frankly, and while they may not have to offer Spurs numbers, it will be a significant raise. Of course he deserves it, but now you're not just looking at netting the 35m (euros?) from his sale plus whatever savings on his current contract. Now you're looking at the savings on the contract renewal he needs. That could easily push the savings to 50m. (Go ahead and factor in the same for Marquinhos.)

Roma's not turning that down. Not this Roma. So, there's a plausible chance you'll be watching Erik's last match.

Every player has his price, and Roma are in a deep hole as far as their finances go. If they sell this week for €35m, it still leaves them a week to pick up a €20m replacement on lower wages. Right now, it genuinely doesn't look like they can afford not to do that. The hole they are in is a *lot* deeper than Osvaldo's transfer fee.

They made a loss of almost €60m in the 2011-2102 season, and there's no evidence they have done anything about it in the past year. This - arguably - puts them at risk of a UEFA ban under FFP rules (along with Inter).

What makes their position even more precarious than Inter's however, is that they are not only making large year-on-year losses, they are also *heavily* in debt. In fact, they are the 7th most debt-ridden club in the world.
