Djed Spence

both can be true - they are doing a lot of good and selling spence is a mistake.
can you handle that ?
I can handle that the manager possibly sees that he can get a lot of money for a player that may not be in his plans to strengthen in other areas.

I can handle that it maybe a long time mistake. But alternatively I can handle the backing of the manager to the hilt for the first time that I can remember from the board.

The handler.

Spence obviously had a fantastic World Cup tournament and his value at the moment is as high as it possibly can be. We also have Destiny Udogie who is more than capable of playing at the position Spence would be used. Right now it seems Tottenham would have a decision to make in whether to attempt to sell Spence or Udogie.

I would keep Spence. I rate him higher than Udogie.

Less injury prone too. But Udogie is the better player . To be honest both could be sold and I wouldn’t be that bothered if replaced adequately
I think it's open to debate from both players to be honest - Udogie had a great first few months but has never returned to that level and that time was a long time ago. Yes it could be because of injuries, but equally there are plenty of players who come to this league as an unknown quantity and start off well and then tail off. He has question marks over him.

As for Spence, he has done ok when playing for us but nothing spectacular and you have to be fair and say he's never had a consistent run as he has been used as backup/utility. He had a very good World Cup, you can't judge a player off of that though so the question is - will he kick on from there, or was his motivation during that tournament to show what he could do to potential suitors elsewhere?

Plus of course we have Robertson now who I doubt has arrived here on big wages without getting a decent crack at first choice LB. I don't know the answers, but I wouldn't say anything is clear cut in that LB position....

Or he might be showing he level and wants to show the new set up what he can do. Ange said he had that kind of attitude the other pre season, so that might also be the case.

Not sure "you can't judge a player off that" is as cut and dry as you make it sound TBH

Well yeah exactly, that's another take on it and you or I don't know - you can't judge a player off of a single tournament when he hasn't performed to a particularly high level before, that's a pretty standard rule tbh no matter what slant you want to put on it....

What slant? That he played well and it should be recognised? Jeezz

I'm not even sure what you're trying to debate - it was literally said 'he had a very good World Cup' and the question is if he will kick on from there.

Nothing you have said is any different, all you've done is offer another reason for why Spence did well at the tournament....

And then caveat it with "you can't judge a player off that though" which is the part I was clearly debating, as thats the part I highlighted in my reply

Well if you think you can judge a player off of a single tournament, especially when you are a PL team I'm glad you're not doing our scouting is all I will say :)....

I am yet to see Udogie's better performance since the first year.

I like Udogie alot TBH, I think 100% his progress has been hampered by injuries. I think with what we have at FB options now we are in safe hands. I certainly don't think it needs surgery this summer, especially when we have Solomon to move on and one of Richy and or Solanke to shift before improving

I agree but most transfers are a gamble, we signed Nico Claesen on the back of his performance for Belgium in 1986 WC and he struggled to adapt but on the reverse we signed Ardiles following Argentinas win. To be honest Ardiles didn't catch the eye as much as Kempes, Luque and Pasarella.

Those theories are flawed slightly on two sides, 1 - loads of transfers have worked based on a WC, 2 - many players have failed off the back of longer PL campaigns when they have moved. So maybe its more a case that all transfers are a risk rather than the WC not being a very good indicator

Indeed, hence why there are question marks over whether he sustains that form coming into this season or not. Not sure he will be around here to be honest, especially if this talk about Gray being RB comes to fruition.

I'd happily keep him, but I think he's a better LB and the signing of Robertson does make me wonder where he fits in as Udogie being left footed gives better balance going forward. Interesting to see what happens with him....
