Djed Spence

Corruption. Now America are out, all VAR decisions will be to aid Messi lift the cup
If that was actually the case what about the Norway goal that was disallowed for a push by Haaland but no penalty given to Norway for the push on their on a later corner?

It's swings and roundabouts, some times in your favour and sometimes not.

He's a better defender than Porro, so it depends if you want your RB to be better in the offers I've side of the game or defensive side of things. I personally prefer a defensively sound RB who can attack.
It's more likely to be dictated by the opposition you are facing....which RBs skillset you require for that match (same for left back)

Not disagreeing but Haaland got penalized because he put both hands on the defenders back, one hand or shoulder lean with same force and he would likely have gotten away with it.

Disagree (and we can do that), you are absolutely allowed to shield the ball, and the opponent cannot come through you from behind.

If you can give penalties for "follow through" after clearing a ball, I really don't see how you can say someone going through you isn't a penalty because you shielded the ball.
yes this.

defenders do it all the time to deny attackers access to the ball

midfielders too when they go past a defender and gets contacted from behind

it was a pen for me, imagine if romero did that to gyokeres in the penalty box

I thought he was easily the best defender on the pitch last night, he's really grown into the tournament and should start on Wednesday.
i think he will be a better right mid - can use his dribbling and speed both directions, i suspect he isn't suited for full length pitch coverage - few are.

So 'ITK' rumours that Neco Williams could be targeted as a replacement for Djed. What are peoples thought on that scenario?
Would that be an upgrade or a downgrade?
In a season where Gibbs-White really stepped up with goals and assists to keep them out of the bottom 3, Williams was still voted Player of the Season.
If he’s happier to be a squad player than Spence is (and I don’t know Djed’s outlook on that) or if RDZ likes him more and we can capitalise on Spence’s good PR right now to turn a profit then it doesn’t seem an awful plan

zlatan is hilarious and often correct - here he cites why spence could not do well when paired with madueke

Zlatan Ibrahimović was highly critical of Noni Maduke during the first half of England’s 2026 World Cup quarterfinal win over Norway, joking that the winger was less effective than a potentially game-interfering cable.

This is how I see it. Think most would agree here as well it’s just about how much you value each of them. I will say it again Spence is not a player id be actively looking to sell. But if he does go it’s probably the right call from the club.

Reasons to keep Spence
  1. Proven Premiership level Full Back
  2. Can play both sides
  3. Very effective player in paticular game states
  4. Known commodity at the club and appears to be popular in the dressing room
  5. Successful World Cup should improve his confidence and therefore performances moving forward

Reasons to sell Spence
  1. At the peak of his value
  2. Been at the club for 4 years so any sale will be mostly profit
  3. Not a perfect style fit for RDZ full back
  4. May have reached his peak ability and won’t develop further
  5. May become unhappy in a backup role without European football

Great post. I think the biggest reason to sell Spence would be the trade-off to improving the 1st eleven based on running out of net spending and needing to raise further finances. There are very few players that would create that much profit in this year's accounts.

I'd like to think there probably aren't any fans that don't think he's even good enough to be a squad player. If he stays he'll be a player that gets pitch time most weeks would be my guess.

Correct. Because of how the finance rules work we need to either sell players for a huge mark up on the initial transfer fee or that have been at the club for a long time. Any player that's not a guaranteed starter and falls in to those categories will be under consideration.

If you look at the players we could potentially sell this summer. This is an estimate of what you would need to deduct from any transfer fee we receive based on transfer fee, time at the club and most recent contact extension.

Romero - £10.6M
Spence - £5.6M
Udogie - £9.6M
Sarr - £5.6M
Lankshear - £0.58M
Vicario - £6.9M
Phillips - £0.8M
Solomon - ZERO
Maddison - £18.0M
Solanke - £39.0M
Bergvall - £8.6M
Danso - £16.0M
Tel - £26.67M
Gallagher - £27.2M

Highlighted bit I think is the consideration, if he wants more football.

Interestingly I think he struggles in new environments (or has historically), if it's working here for him, he may not want to change it
