As someone who grew up playing in the 80s, if an opposition player put one in on you, you were inclined to give one back to show you weren’t going to be intimidated. Whether you appreciate it or not, Romero is a bit of a throwback to that era.

While he isn’t the passer that Romero is, I still rate him as perfectly good enough in that area of his game. He is a very good all round footballer and I believe he’s underrated simply because he’s our third choice option.

i put danzo and romero at the same level. i rate consistency a lot as its the basis for good team and romero doesn't offer us that

Yes however the rules have changed a lot and many teams and players have adapted. I would assert that all top players are able to take advantage of modern football rules.

Romero in his current state can only play for PSG and Real Madrid for obvious reasons lolm

I think you may have fallen for the awful narrative from the commentators mate.

The bizarre attempt to defend with a scorpion kick was just him trying to stop a ball that was behind him from getting past him and to the Sunderland player that was the other side of him and likely to score if the ball went past. I'm not sure what else he could've done other than what he did there, the ball was a good yard behind him as he was running in the other direction.

I didn't see him running around brainlessly at all. He was basically either defending against Brobbey or helping cover Porro on the right.

The 'revenge tackle' as you call it, was one where he clearly won the ball and one that most centre backs make without getting a booking. Romero's reputation just caused the ref to see it as a yellow - and you as well it seems?

There was nothing at all wrong with Romero's performance against Sunderland IMO.

I can see Gray being an excellent captain one day. Maybe Danso, too. Perhaps Palninha would be a good choice, but is it right to have a loanee as Captain? If it works then it must be…

Errr, Toby needs to recognize that managers help careers. He was INCREDIBLY lucky to play under Pochettino. He was also INCREDIBLY lucky that Levy would not endorse Poch's request to sell him/upgrade when Toby stalled on signing a new contract and came back from a long injury overweight (by Poch's standards anyway). I have to also say, calling out Romero like he has is unhelpful. Toby. There are gooner pundits and Cundy to do that. Keep your powder dry...

The narrative is absurd. And to see Alderweireld getting involved is distasteful to me. He says he loves the club, well STFU and be quiet about us until the summer eh?

While I have been critical of Romero recently I had forgotten about that particular incident. The ‘commentators’ were highly critical of him for that attempted clearance but neither of them offered a view on something better that he could have done. The level of commentary and punditry available on all platforms is so staggeringly poor.
 
It's all well and good saying Romero gets a certain card because of his reputation rather than the challenge.

The problem is it's his consistent stupid challenges and unnecessary over aggression that has got him this reputation in the first place, it hasn't come out of thin air. He's been unlucky on occassions, and he's also been lucky to get away with things on a fair few occasions.

As a captain, the person the rest of the team are meant to look up to he has been a complete let down - he is poles apart from previous captains and this whole 'leadership group' has been a bit of a joke.....

We need more ex-players calling out this crop of losers like Alderweireld has - United, Liverpool, Arsenal players get called out by 'their' pundits all the time when they let standards drop - we don't really have that and maybe a bit of damaged pride will give them a kick up the arse.

Toby was a very highly rated CB before he ever played for Poch. So maybe he was just lucky to play under great coaches his entire career...
