My issue with Romero as a leader is that he seems very sulky when things aren’t going his way. The slow recovery to position, sitting on the floor asking for a foul, for example. I would like to see him brushing these things off and getting on with the game as soon as he realises he’s not getting a foul. Or sprint back into position when an attack breaks down. That’s setting an example. A positive example. Then making it clear he expects the same of everyone else. I think that’s what Henderson would do/has done/does.
The irony is that Henderson is a significantly limited footballer compared to Romero (in my opinion) but I think he has a far greater positive impact on the field.
Of course, all of what you and I say and think and opine about Romero and his effect on his teammates might be total gonads. He might be inspirational behind the scenes and already coaxing the very best out of his team mates. I just don’t think that’s the case.
I am not sure who will Captain the side in his absence - VDV, perhaps? Or Vic? I don’t really see that urgency or demonstrative leadership in them, either. In fact, I am not sure which fit players of ours would make a strong captain.
I can see Gray being an excellent captain one day. Maybe Danso, too. Perhaps Palninha would be a good choice, but is it right to have a loanee as Captain? If it works then it must be…
