Cristian Romero

Ange spoke about how transfers were done, a shortlist was identified and drawn up by the club and then they would work together to whittle it down and narrow in on a primary target.

I remember there being discussion on here at the time that VDV was the club cheaping out rather than going for Tapsoba
Tapsoba was the more highly rated defender at the time if we are honest. I haven't really followed him since but I believe he's still highly rated. Having a quick look at their statistical performances seems to support that view.

Romero gives more of a brick than it seems like the owners give. The owners failed the team in the January window. Their actions have put unnecessary pressure on a squad that is already decimated by injury. Romero did the right thing speaking out and I fully back him. If he ends up leaving, I really hope not, I don’t think anyone can blame him after our owners have shown very little ambition, just a lot of talk.

I love your irrational faith in untested youth... especially one who could not even make the team at the mighty Stoke City 🤪

I assume you've tracked Phillips fledgling career? He's the grand old age of 20 and has played 25 times this season. He's already at 100 senior appearances in his career before his 21st b'day. That's not bad considering the position he plays isn't normally populated with U21s. He's averaging a WhoScored average rating for the season close to 7 as well.

He has actually fought his way to become a Stoke first choice centre half after the early season when they went for the older guys.

People are just trying their luck, the January window closes, Romero makes some misinterpreted comments and people use that as fuel to keep themselves relevant due to no news on immediate transfers anymore. It's text book flimflam at it's finest.

I can say unequivocally that Ange pushed for VdV as he was both rapid and left-footed. He was insistent on the left-footed angle. I heard directly from a source at the time. He was backed (obviously).

As I said to Billy just now, I heard at the time from a very well-placed source as to why Postecoglu wanted him specifically.Yes, Tapsoba was the better known and 'rated' option. VdV was not proven.

Ange would have had his input of course, he was part of the process

I'll be more specific. The committee wanted Tapsoba. Ange wanted VdV, despite the relative inexperience. His preference was backed. Whether you believe what I'm saying in this specific incident is obviously yours to decide mate.
BTW, we signed VdV in August 2023 and Lange joined us in November 2023, so no, not on his watch.
Again, he (Lange) did well to identify Danso.

Ok so regarding the point in bold that means the who what where and whys regarding the VdV signing are by the by as the point was wrt track record of the current transfer setup.

Regarding the rest, the manager is part of the committee not separate to it - Tapsoba or Mickey - they were on the right path either way with that one.

I thought we just guzumped Wolves for Danso on deadline day? Like we did Arsenal and Wilson yesterday. And Villa and Gallagher a few weeks ago. I'd credit Lange a lot for Bergvall, and for taking the risk on Gray. But not a lot else (maybe Kinsky, Odobert and Tel in time; Souza from the latin world feels more like Paratici's parting gift?)

Got it. Just for the record, it was wrong to detail Lange as being part of VdV ;) ;)

Agreed on the second point, they were in the right area and in fairness did the right thing in backing that manager's personal choice, so positive on both counts. However, the manager/head coach will always have the final say.

Ah yes, re: Danso I am thinking back and you're right. I suppose you'd still have to give him credit for at least being alive to the right gazumping if you know what I mean!

I think it's going to be tough to fully evaluate his contributions based on the age of player he works best in profiling. I agree, Gray and Bergvall were excellent spots and pickups. Tel is a player for me, but I fear not for Frank!!!
