Brennan Johnson

I never warmed to or really rated him. He had all the natural instinct in the world, but just cowardly in his play. He'd never be aggressive or have a go at players. Im sure there's some systems he would fit, but none that id ever want to see us playing.

Hoepfully we now quickly go and spunk that cash on Savinho or equivalent

Johnson can do some things very well.
Right place right time when arriving in the box.
Decent finisher.
Crosses well if he's broken free and inside the box

Most of these plusses come into play off the back of someone else's work.

A top wide man really has to cross well from wider...have the constant threat of beating his opponent one on one. And occasionally score or assist with a bit of magic. All will be trickier and/or faster than BJ.

Ironically, BJ might be, or appear to be, much better in a much better team.

He was a worthwhile buy, as someone identified that potentially had a higher ceiling. Alas not.

It's a good move for both. He has Kudus in front of him, and seeing the way Kudus plays, Deki would be a more like for like replacement as he cuts in in a similar way and has strength in possession

On one hand it’s the right move for the club and him, on the other it’s a huge shame. Got dogs abuse on social media, came back and scored like 7 in a row, top goal scorer and the scorer of our first cup winning goal in 17 years…and gone 6 months later.

Hard to know why he couldn’t work in a Thomas Frank team. Barely even got a chance yet is still our 3rd highest goal scorer this season. Go figure.

Selling a player for a 15 - 20 mill loss two years after signing him for 50mill+ is a failure.... and considering the likes of Cole Palmer cost less... that is a damning proof of the incompetence of our scouting and signing decisions
You called him a failed signing and then cite the price we're selling him for as evidence compared to, you know, what he actually did for us on the pitch.

To be clear, before words are put in my mouth, I am not arguing that he was a huge success, just taking issue with your honking categorisation of him as a failure.

Your Cole Palmer point would only have relevance if we had a chance of getting him but chose Johnson over him instead - do you have ITK that this is what occurred?

We’ll likely have made a profit with how transfers work in football.

Unlike the majority on here, I think there is more in this lad and I'm sad we are letting him go. £35m seems a bargain given he is a proven goal scorer in the PL and allegedly is being courted by several teams.

That said, I have to trust the manager and the player doesn't benefit from sitting on the bench week on week out. Wish him well whatever happens.

What's the alternative? Keep him as a spare blocking a space for youth player?

With Frank's 'horseshoe' ball progression tactics I think it is imperative that our wide players can take the ball with their back to play and hold the ball up (probably also why Frank hasn't been starting Odobert). Assuming the club are sticking with Frank longish term (i.e. for more than just this season) then we probably need wide players who have that attribute as their main strength.

Although he managed goals last season and thats not to be under appreciated, his overall footballing ability was never contributing beyond that, which isn't enough in this game. I expected better from his earlier years talents, that wasn't realised. Thats why its Palace and not him being nicked by anyone else with massive designs now.

I think he will do very well in Palace's standard counter attacking style of football. I can also see Wharton finding him with fast passes in behind (the type of balls that we just don't play).

Agreed.

Got a soft spot for palace, but if he was that great he would be going to a bigger club for £30 million.
I said for the last 2 years we wouldn't get our money back and no top 6 team would be interested.

No hate but he's just not a player suited to a team attempting to dominate and play decent football. For a deep sitting counter attacking team he can get decent numbers.

I think he'd also do well in a high pressing team that looks to capitalise on transitions after turnovers (such as Bournemouth).
