Well he would be a massive upgrade on "cdm Dier" that's for sure. Would love it if we somehow managed to sign him, but I have a sneeky feeling that if he became available there would be bigger fish than us ready to sign him.

We play possession football - you can't have a weak link like that in a team that plays like us - especially not in central midfield.

Think what it's like when Townsend's playing - intricate passing in little triangles, we've got the ball for 15-20 passes, the opposition is getting pulled out of shape and tired from all the chasing.

Then Townsend gets the ball and the next person to touch the ball is either the lino or some poor sod in row z

Its a bit of a leap saying he would be a weak link, what we need is someone in M/F who can be more defensive and read the defensive side of the game better then the two who are in there now. And as I and others have said before stats do not always tell the whole story. ( but I am not getting into that again ;))

I don't think that is all Poch is looking for though. Being comfortable on the ball and being able to pick a quick pass seem to be high up his wishlist.

I do not disagree with that, but we also need more awareness in CM then we have now.

I don't think that Poch is after an out and out DM.

I will say what I have said before, no one ( not me anyway) is saying we need a out and out DM, what we need is a CM player who has a defensive awareness of the game unlike Mason and to a extent Bentaleb.

Milo was replying to a post talking about DMs though

I'm guessing he would shift a lot of replica shirts though... plenty of people buying their Spurs mate a "Bender" shirt for their birthdays as a juvenile joke (I would expect one from my Chelsea supporting cousin if Bender signs for us).

I know, buts its part of the conversation, no?

At the moment we do not have a proper enforcer....not since we sold Sandro really. Not having an adept DM in our squad would not be a very wise in my opinion.

The lad might be no frills when it comes to passing, but sometimes you need a player to win that crucial central midfield area, none of our current roster is suited for this, its very important we find the right player to compliment Nabil.

A spurs cm partnership called Sven & Nabil....who woulda thunked it.

We are singing from the same hymn book. :)

I do not see where an enforcer fits into a midfield pairing where the manager wants both players to do a bit of everything and both be comfortable on the ball.

I hear so many people insist that Pochettino doesn't want a defensive midfielder; he wants two central players who can - in your words - "do a bit of everything".

I get that. I understand the theory and it may well be what Pochettino wants. But when those same people talk about Bentaleb and Mason as our midfield partnership... neither of whom can "do a bit of everything" (because both of them are defensively shambolic) I don't understand them at all. Surely "being able to adequately cover the defence when necessary" would be included in the "bit of everything". Right?

I understand that and do not disagree, however we have a pairing at the moment when at least one of them ( Mason) can not do the defensive part of the game so under that reasoning we should look for someone who can.

Then I would worry that poch/we are to inflexible.

funny thing is we have reverted back to being the spurs that are easy on the eye but with a soft underbelly. We are not in a position to buy the likes of Vidal or Schneiderlin clearly. So being unable to buy players who are good at everything we are therefore in the market for specialists with weaknesses in their game...or things they are not so strong at.

Call me old fashioned but I would like our squad to have a mixture of everything....pace,passing,physical strength, dribbling.

I will stick to my guns on this one....if we go into this season without an enforcer/anchor type dm/cm then we are bang in trouble...especially against the big sky teams.

You seem to be contradicting yourself with your posts in this thread mate - maybe I'm reading wrong but on one hand you're saying you don't want a DM but then on the other your saying you'd happily take a player who displays all the characteristics of a DM even if he isn't particularly good in the other parts of the game we would require from a CM, and seemingly agreeing with MFs posts which suggests deploying this type of player in a role where his only duties are to protect the back four and break up play (ie a DM) which in my mind would then having us complaining further down the line that he isn't good enough on the ball for how we want to play and off we go to find a player more suited...

We need a CM who's good enough defensively and on the ball - we aren't limited to buying players who are only good in one of these areas, so why are we talking about making do?

Can someone explain to me what, if not a DM, is Wanyama at Soton? who was bought by Poch...

Both Schneiderlin and Wanyama are CMs who when played together shared responsibilities, both defensively and offensively. From what I saw anyway

Isn't it just as inflexible to insist that we need a DM?

Poch picked passers over more defensively minded players last season. I'm sure that he'd be happy with a more defensive midfielder if they are good on the ball. Failing that, I think that he will pick passers over enforcers because it fits our game plan better.
