Achilles tendon surgery

superfaisty

Nico Claesen
Am going to be going under the knife soon to fix my left achilles tendon and was wondering if anyone had had the surgery before.

Long story short, tore it last summer but didnt find out id torn it till few weeks ago, just thought it was a strain. Physio didnt pick up id fully torn it until after 8 weeks and it not getting any better.

Whats worse is radiologist who scanned it says both ends of the tendon are not joined by quite a gap so specialist doesnt think he can knit it together so hes going to try summat else.

Hi op. Google "John Jackson achilles" and you'll find a BBC article to lift your spirits.

The BBC broadcast a programme today ahead of the winter Olympics, and focussed on a few individuals including Jackson. He ruptured his Achilles in July but will be competing in Sochi.

Well worth a read, watch the programme if you can find it.

I didn't snap my Achilles or anything but both of them stopped me from running. I rested it, massaged them etc. Nothing worked.

I tried acupuncture and deep massage and it fixed them. (8 1 hour sessions)

Sounds as if yours are too far gone though.

Did your radiologist explain what they meant by "both ends of the tendon are not joined by quite a gap". Seems an odd comment because if your Achilles was completely ruptured presumably you would have a lot of trouble lifting your toes up, wouldn't be able to stand on tiptoe and therefore walking would be difficult, let alone anything else. Which seems odd given that it was considered a strain until a few weeks ago. What were your symptoms.

If it is partial rupture, depending on location, severity and so on, it might be sorted out with the correct non-surgical physio and rehab. Surgery on an Achilles is usually the last resort as obviously more disruptive and doesn't always work. So I'd make sure you've exhausted all other avenues before having it operated on (and you may have done that - especially given that you've had scan).

Hey ringo after weeks of physio I couldn't lift my weight balancing onlyon my left foot. Radiologist said that there's a muscle that runs parallel to my Achilles that has been doing what my Achilles should have been doing. Hence I could walk albeit with a slight limp which was less pronounced after having physio but I'm gutted that the physio didn't spot that it had torn completely.

Basically specialist said no choice but to operate if I want to be able torun again.

He said he wouldn't be able to knit the tendon together but would move the muscle next to it to give me the ability to run on it. Surgery confirmed for this Thursday :(
