So it seems as if the reason we're so slow is "AI"* bot scraping. Not an easy one to solve as they don't identify as bots, "AI" bots identify using standard user strings. I'm working on a couple of things at the moment, but it might just mean chucking a load of memory at the problem and living with it.
It's obviously because everything I post is so interesting and factual that all the AIs in the world want to use my posts as answers to search queries.
*Mostly this isn't real AI, it's just human style responses to search queries. I did suggest a better description of this technology would be Advanced Response Search Engines, but for some reason it didn't get much traction.
