Medical Department

i've never really understood how in the 70's teams played with 15 players for the whole season, there was only one sub, the ball was a rock, pitches were abysmal, tackles were hard and rarely penalized yet players these days are falling like flies and out for ages for simple things.?

most injuries players have now probably wouldn't prevent them from playing a game of football to a low standard on a brick pitch either - the difference is the standard is higher at the top level and the players are genuine athletes which makes the margins for success/failure so small.

Once again I feel our medical department has a lot to answer for. Against Arsenal we started at least three players who were not % fit. Kane , Ali and Dembele were all under par in my opinion. To carry maybe one passenger is maybe fine in a derby, but to play three is reckless. We had two full weeks to get them tip too and we failed miserably.

I had the same complaint about playing a clearly sub par Wanyama against Chelsea - and we haven’t seen him since.

Will Dembele ever be fit enough again ?

Why have Lamela and Rose’s seemingly innocuous injuries taken so long to clear up?

Questions need to be asked.

I don't think we can blame the medical department for those 3 players today, they can't cure injuries miraculously. Maybe whatever they had hasn't quite healed yet but Poch thought it was worth the gamble.

For the others yes we need to manage players better particularly with Lamela where he was apparently advised against having surgery but on the flipside I'd also assume opinion was sought from some of the worlds leading surgeons on these players.

Been thinking about this for a bit,
seems we only send players for scan's if their problems continue for a few weeks
but should they be thinking more about scanning injuries once the swelling has gone down, a scan with a specialist doctor viewing the photos would cost say £10,000,
if that player then gets the right treatment/opeation (because we have not waited a few weeks to see if he recovers) he comes back a few weeks earlier that saves the club money by not paying wages extra weeks to a (later) scanned player
look at Rose, wanyama, lamella, all in the hands of the medical team, when their injuriers continued the players went for scan's which found the underlining problem, but that delay cost money in wages and unless treatment
even fit players could/should have a full scans that would give base line photos to compare with the injury photo/scans

I very much doubt we're being stingy and not willing to pay for scans, I guess we are getting top medical advice but some players don't recover as originally expected. There's players all over the league who have been out for ages with what sounds like innocuous injuries.

I don't think its about the cost, I just think by not doing it as soon as the swelling goes, with some players we are wasting time by not getting the right treatment/operation
it took 100+yrs for managers & players to understand diet and not drinking alcohol was a good idea,
most clubs now have sports science departments, and not just a sponge man, I hope we also look to have scans and other body checks as a matter of course when players are injuried

We are not and its foolish for anyone to think/believe that is the case. You can have the best medical brains/ facilities ( and we have) but it still depends on the individual how fast they heal. Spurs are a in a million dollars buisness and to suggest that they are not up to scratch is as i say foolish at best.

So two weeks should be enough to get someone fully fit from an injury... right... Care to expand on that? Which injuries should we be able to fully heal in two weeks?

Dembele has had fitness issues for years and quite clearly looks in need of careful management. What makes you think this is something our medical department should be able to handle better?

The decision on if a player should start when close to full fitness is up to Pochettino, not the medical department.

Which teams should we try to emulate with our medical department? Who are doing clearly better than us?

I am not suggesting 2 weeks will cure all injuries, what my gripe is that we seem to rush players who are not fully fit back into service. Wanyama was the clearest example of this. Compare and contrast to Bakayoko of Chelsea who had been out for a similar time yet looked fully up to speed straight away while Wantama was so far off the pace he was diabolically poor from the first minute. He has now exacerbated whatever the problem was and has been out ever since. An extremely poor decision all round imo.

Similarly to play not one, not two but three players clearly not fully fit for the crucial NLD was an error clearly waiting to happen. Whether this is down to Poch or the medical department, I am not sure, but sometimes players need to be protected from themselves for the long term good of the team imo.

What do you mean protected from themselves? Do you think they play a part in the decision whether they're fit enough to play or not?
