Kyle Walker

This for me IF it happens, nothing against Trippier who has done well this season but IF he is the replacement for Walker then we have downgraded in that posistion for sure.

True, but he'd be adequate as a first-choice RB while the new guy beds in and KWP shapes up - a transition season with him as our first-choice RB would still be relatively pain-free given his ability and proven reliability (mostly).

We haven't been this good for 30 years. We have players who are the best in their position in the league and we have Kane and Alli who are the two of the finest young players in world football who could get in to most teams in world football. I agree we have done an admirable job keeping wages low but I think we're being naive if we think we can continue that strategy forever given much progress the club has shown on the pitch overtaking the likes of Emirates Marketing Project and United on the pitch. I don't think we have to match what the top clubs pay but I don't believe we can continue paying a third of what those clubs pay their top players.
Keeping wages low has been key in getting us to where we are. And Levy has done very well with our wage structure and strategy. Most of our big players have signed long contracts. We've been in a better place in terms of that than some of our richer competitors. I think Levy is continuing to get these things right. We're increasing spending at a good rate from what I can see.

I really do think that if he is to go that selling Walker to an English club would be the wrong thing to do.

Firstly, it reinforces the picture that continues to persist amongst most fans of other top 6 clubs, and some sections of the media, that we sell our best players. We will look no better than Everton shipping Stones to City.

Secondly, we obviously strengthen a team that we are in immediate competition with.

Thirdly, it sends a dangerous signal to others who might become unsettled in the future. The message to our players - most of whom are under long contracts - should be that we NEVER sell to a domestic rival.

I reckon it would be much better in the long run to sell to a foreign club, even if we have to take a bit of a hit financially.

Here's hoping that Kyle stays, though!

I'm gutted if Walker is off, but I hope we can make a good amount of money out of the sale and re-invest it well. In all honesty, if the breakdown is because Poch says he isn't fit enough to do 2 games a week then I agree. With our style and the amount of running expected of the fullback, you would be asking for trouble expecting one man to do it well for 180+ minutes a week.

Firstly, Walker isn't exactly one of our best. I would place Kane, Eriksen, Alli, Dembele, Wanyama, Rose, Toby, Verts and Lloris as above him.

Secondly, I would argue it almost weakens City. They're getting a mistake prone, non crossing headless chicken instead of Sagna or Zabaletta. Both Sagna and Zabaletta are defensively on a par if not better than Walker.

Thirdly, in any future discussions with players, Levy maintains the logic that each transfer is a unique deal and therefore so is his assessment of the situation. We are selling Walker because Poch believes it is the best for the team in terms of how good he actually is versus what financially return we get, plus we are weakening City's defence. Imagine when Guardiola gets his non defence mitts on Walker, with Stones as cover, they'll ship loads of goals.

I agree with your final point. If Real or Barca want him then great. However it seems they recognise his flaws and aren't even taking the bait. Plus City inflate prices too much for even them.

Levy has said players can want all they want. We have signed most on long contracts that they were happy with at the time. If we had performed badly then would they expect a reduction?

Very true....but slightly naive from Levy. Think he's on top of it though. He's not gonna go all Peter Ribbsdale on us anytime soon.

if kyle is only 80% committed to this team, he can go, Poch will mould/find a hungry player 100% committed to the tottenham "project"

Woah, cool down there, mate. He's improved a *lot* this season - this was once a solid description of him, but it's out of date now. He doesn't make many mistakes, he's recognized that his crossing's sub-par so he just fizzes it in at pace across the box and he's *very* tactically astute in terms of when to make his runs and when to hold - on the shoulder of the last man, he almost plays like a winger in terms of being canny enough to pick his moments to break the offside trap.

I know we're all a bit disappointed by the rumors (which, I have to emphasize, still don't mean that he's off for sure), but there's no need to underrate him to this extent. He's a good, solid player, and he really makes our side better.

But so does Trippier - different strengths, but he's also good in his own way. Which is why losing Kyle wouldn't be the greatest loss in the world. But if City get him, they'll be getting a running machine who has ironed out many of the kinks in his game - a very, very good RB all-round.

I will be disappointed if he leaves, but am hopeful we let him know he is going to get a pay rise which puts him in the top pay bracket at the Club. That will ease the pain of alternating with Trippier. Nice to see a modern player actually wanting to play rather than simply collect the pay cheque.
At Wembley, we will need more running power and athleticism, hence Walker and Rose are crucial. In fact, we are going to have to find 3 or 4 more.
I am dreaming Bale will return to challenge Cliff for the best left winger we ever had.

You honestly think City buying Walker would weaken their defence? Really???

The question then is, as has been debated here, who becomes the second man? No guarantee we can find one that's going to make such a strong pairing as we have at present.

well he is not going to massively improve them, not because of his talents, more Guardiola's expansive style of play and tactics. Guardiola is all about attack attack attack, the art of defending is an annoyance.

I don't think he's the answer to their defensive problems but I agree with your post, he has improved a lot since Poch arrived and he would be an instant upgrade for Emirates Marketing Project, that alone should stop us from selling to them.

He's also given us six years of loyal first-team service (after spending two more out on loan after signing in 2009), which is important to remember. It's not like he's a recent signing now itching to leave after just a season performing to his potential (which happens all too often these days at many other clubs) - he's given us more than a half a decade and stayed relatively professional throughout. He deserves a bit more than being written off as rubbish because he's supposedly (supposedly) itching to play more and thinks he can do that at City or wherever.

If we do sell him to City, it will be for an extortionate goddamn fee. But if it happens, there shouldn't be any rancour, imo. Also important to recognize that he's not leaving us in the lurch, if he does go - he's leaving with full knowledge that there's another RB here who can do a commendable job covering for him, to say nothing of KWP waiting in the wings. So y'know, he's a good sort - if (if) he leaves, he does so with our blessing, and that's the way it should be.

In a recent meeting between the board and members of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust, Levy was asked about players’ contracts.

The minutes of the meeting recorded his response thus: “DL [Levy] said all players were under contracts, contracts they were happy to sign at the time.

Levy: “They would be expected to honour those contracts. They wouldn’t have had a reduction if things had gone badly. DL said no player would be sold who Tottenham didn’t want to sell for non-footballing reasons.”

I dont believe its to do with Walkers fitness, hes a very fit player. Perhaps he feels like hes just gone stale at spurs. Hes a northan bloke and moving to Manchester might work for his life outside of football. He may think ill go city , double my wages, better chance of winning something.

Id rather keep him but if we had to sell someone in the first team it would probably be him. Trippier is more than good enough and can actually cross a ball.
