The Goon Thread

Darren Bent transfer all over again.
All Vardy is good at is playing on the shoulder of the last defender.
Arsenal dont sit deep and hit teams on the counter ever.

They used to successful with counter attacking goals when they had the speed of Anelka and Henry.

This signing just gives them another string to their bow. They've lacked real speed and directness in the forward positions for a while. Walcott doesn't count because he doesn't have a brain. Vardy is at the top of his game, is a clever dirty runt and if he stsys for will score goals.

With their fitness record though, watch him pick up injuries from now on. Inevitable.

Well he is a scumbag so the fact that Arsenal have taken a fancy for him doesn't come as a shock.

I think, as Scara has stated countless times, that he was batting well above his average last season and that he won't be anywhere near PL top goal scorer ever again but at Arsenal with better players around him he could probably get about 15 goals for the Goons which isn't a bad return.

The question for Vardy is whether he'd be happy to not be a guranted starter. Leciester will likely be in the Champions League for only one season but he'd start every game.

But money talks for even the richest of footballers, let alone someone who has only recently been getting top flight wages.

Unlike Wenger to sign a 29 year old forward for massive money. Could it be a last big push for the title in the final year of his contract before walks away. Once he is gone we might just finish above the runts

I'd be happy if they made Vardy their main forward signing. He might do ok for one season tops, then just fade away into being a nothing player for them. And even then, I don't think he'd push them to a level beyond where they currently are, he isn't Aguero.

The Vardy signing is probably just enough to help them to a top 4 place. Wenger has panicked because of next season when he will be up against Mourinho, Guardiola, Klopp, Conte and Poch plus who knows what Koeman might do with Everton and a load of money.

I just hope Spurs are not being complacent behind the scenes. The competition now is mightily fierce.

It's been said before many times but https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regression_toward_the_mean

Are you being sarcastic?

About what? That signing Vardy will help them consolidate a top 4 place? Why not, he is a good addition to their squad. Just my opinion. Top 4 and finishing above Spurs is all that matters to Wenger.

Vardy is no better (probably worse) than they already have.

He's as suited to their system as Bent was to ours - a very, very limited striker that requires the opposition to think they're better than you.

Even if he is better than what they have, that improvement would be easily outstripped by the natural growth of our team who are still learning to play our system.

It doesn't matter, we won't finish above them until Wenger leaves. The end of last season just proved it. You just keep believing about our natural growth and players still adapting to Poch:)

He's just come back!
He's only a nipper - I'm not sure how I would handle that kind of knock to my life at his age.
Oh it must be so hard to earn 100k a week for not playing football, otherwise known as doing fudge all. Don't know if I'd kope....

that's my take on it too - if he's their sole CF signing this summer id be happy with that

however if they sign him with the intention of actually developing a plan b and bring in another CF for the first choice XI then id be a bit worried

Agreed.

Anelka and Henry offered a hell of a lot more than counter attacking though. It's true Arsenal at their best have been one of the best counter attacking sides around, but at their best they've also been a lot more than that. I don't really see Vardy offering that kind of quality for them.

Vardy has one great season behind him. After 1 average season in the PL (at best). 1 of his 2 seasons in the Championship was good in terms of goal return (more or less 1 in 2). The other was mediocre. I didn't watch him or them at that time, could be that he played wide for some it. But he still only has one really good season at a top level, and he's 29. He's not an automatic success at all moving to another side with a different style of play.

Utter nonsense. Last season proves nothing. We have a young and improving side, last season was not the peak of the ability.

Back when Wenger inherited the best defence in the league.
The difference is Henry and Anelka didnt just work on the counter, they could play.
We'll see how well Vardy does when he doesn't score for a few games, has to put up with abuse from Leicester fans and gets booed off by the typical emirates support. Wenger isnt gonna built a side around him like Raneiri did.
