One player from the past 20 years.

For me it is really between Modric and Bale and I would choose Bale for goal scoring ability alone.

Honourable mentions to VDV (however I don't think Poch would put up with having to sub him on the 60 minute mark every game), Berbatov (yes a c*ck but hold up play and goalscoring ability), Sheringham, Keane and Ledley. Ledley would make any team better, much better.

I think that your starting point for a question like this has to be who would fit into the current team and do want Poch wants from his players. As good as they were, that has to rule out players like Ginola and VDV.

Bale is the obvious one.

Would Modric suit Poch's style? I think in some games Poch would still play Dier and Dembele. The same with Carrick.
There's a load of talented players that wouldn't do any of the running Poch needs the likes of Ginola, VDV and Berbatov.

You could make a really strong case for Davids. Come in and bring a real been there and done that winning mentality. But he could end up causing trouble behind the scenes.

What we really need is back up for Kane though. I'd go for Klinsmann over Sheringham. Brings a load of experience and has the personality that would fit in unlike Sheringham who wouldn't be happy being second choice.

Looking at more recent players I think Clint Dempsey would have suited playing in a Poch team. And he's the type of player who'll pop up with a goal in an important game in a run in.

For me... Bale, then Modric, then Keane.

A fit King would be a great asset - but we currently have the best defence in the league, so it's tough to prioritise a defender - even one as good as King.

those saying Modric - how would you line up our midfield 5?

Modric or Bale was my initial thought but then when it came to the above i realized Modric would be at the expense of Alli or Dembele (assuming we kept Dier as CM2) which woud leave us short of goals/penetration or strength

whereas :

--Dier Dembele
Bale Alli Eriksen

seems to have it all...

Bale of course, then Modric, then Sheringham*

*Better stats than Keane and a much better player in general play, plus height, and fewer needless chips/flicks. Oust Lamela, keep Eriksen and Alli

As well as Dembele has improved I would have Modric everyday, one is world class, one is not.

I'm talking more about the setup/dynamics of the team than individual ability

Would Modric in place of Dembele make this a better team, more so than Bale in place of Lamela (for example) would? I don't it would

I thought you were asking those who voted for Modric ( I did) who he would replace. I

He would suit Poch but where would he play?

He is a player who has suffered from not being good enough as a forward or dynamic enough as a midfielder.

Also comparing him to other players from our past he wouldn't make the top 20 for me for a start

cf cover, a great player to bring on in the last 20 as he works his unmentionables off, has a goals in him

some of the greatest players of all time wouldn't be much use in a high press system, it's not a general quality question, more one of horses for courses

One part was asking how you would line up but the main point was how it compared to a team with Bale instead of Lamela/Son - as mulling it over myself led me to choose Bale over Modric as I think it's a more complete midfield with Bale in it. We keep the strength/power/solidity of Dier/Dembele whilst adding strength/creativity and goals to the 3 behind Kane.

Fair enough and you have a good point, however I would not turn down the chance to have Modric back and that is why I choose him.
