Transfer Rumour Thread

Then you have to question the whole strategy then; that clearly says that Poch wanted a striker for the NOW and not just for later...so then the questions are: who was the alternative and why haven't they been brought in instead (plus it's not like we just knew a few days ago what was wanted)..

Berahino - too expensive, Peace has dug his heels in again. Sandro - Barcelona decided not to sell.

Lol; let's revisit this later in April. In one thing to say "we don't need a lot of sigings"; it's totally another to say "we don't need any signings"

Poch has done well, but he can only perform miracles to a certain degree. He has coach well and earned the right to have an extra striker to rotate with one who by next summer will have hardly had a break for nearly two years (and at that time a new striker would have been handly to give the team options going into the new season fully up to speed with Poch's methods, training etc)

By all accounts, it is Poch who has turned down alternatives and is insistent on only signing the right players and preferring to work with what he has if they cannot be secured.

I think that it is different now because this squad is so close to being complete. Finding the right players to complete the squad is arguably harder than when you have a number of weaknesses that need addressing or just tinkle poor players, where any signing would be a step up.

People moan about this happening every time but look at our squad. If we were so bad in the transfer market, would we have the team that we have now?

That is a good point, to improve our team from where we are now ( with the promise we have) was never going to be easy and there was no point bringing players in just to make up the numbers. The players that have been avaliable are no better and in some cases worse then what we already have so there is no point in buying for buyings sake.

In the same way people are expecting Leicester to slump out of the top 4, did ANY of us expect to be in this position at this point, whereby two/three of the bigger clubs have had slumps at the start? What if 'reversion to the mean' results in us going back to 6/7th place most expected us to be in by the end?
How will the "look how great we are now" comments look in retrospect?

As well as we've played so far, I think we are blowing smoke up our butts too easily...

looking at all the crap thats been shuffled around europe for massive amounts of money, I don't see how we could have improved our situation without spending betond our means, we're not gonna drop £30m plus on a player anytime soon

It sounds a little too nice; i remember before things unravelled for AVB that he was meant to "have turned down alternatives several options" etc etc...

The difference for me is that Poch is not a cry-baby that will bring his tantrum to view...atm...

That would not be reversion to mean. Our mean position is somewhere between 4th and 5th. Our stats for the first half of the season suggest that we are good value for our current position and are not there because of luck.

I think the only player I'd have liked us to sign is Charlie Austin, because of his low fee. I think that would have been a decent short-term signing for us, but it's no big deal we didn't try for him -- I just think it would have made sense.

It was the same in AVB's first season when we sat 4th at this time as well...form can change and Arsenal's admittedly was demonic after we beat them in March. An extra striker option then cost us...as i suspect it will again...

There weren't plenty of noises coming out of the club about AVB's frustration with our transfer policy when he was here and how he was identifying targets that were beyond our budget, even if we did train in vain to sign some of them. All of the noises coming out of the club now are that Poch is content with the situation and does not want to bring in players for the sake of it.

I disagree

It's easy for people to blame the failings of other sides but we really are looking like a top competitive side and are progressing from last year where we finished in a decent position

I'm disappointed we haven't added to our weakest area of strength but Poch has made the call by all accounts and it's all on him now

Didn't need to spend £30m. A 6 month loan of a CF would have done me for the window. 2 Windows in a row now where we haven't been able to find a CF which we liked.....

I think that the two situations are very different but it is too late at night for me to go into the whys and wherefores now. Maybe we can discuss it in the stats thread, try and get @scaramanga involved because he will explain it better than me.

Go back to January 2013, the noises coming out from AVB then were the same as Poch now...it was later AFTER that window that the noises changed...Deja Vu methinks (though i don't expect Poch to have a tantrum)

Or that Poch wanted him around the squad to get him ready for next season and he was an acceptable stop gap because there was a long term element.

Maybe Poch thinks there could be better options available in the summer.

He's meant to be getting paid crazy money at Southampton. I know that the bongo brothers at West Ham are not the most reliable of sources but I am sure that one of them said that Austin was on £100k a week now.

No different now than AVB's first January in terms of strengthening our position (and the noises that the 'coach was happy to continue without another striker'). We didn't have skills spread around the squad as we do now, but we WERE as effective as we are now...

No they weren't. What AVB was saying publicly might have been on message but there were plenty of rumours about his dissatisfaction.
