Serious relegation fears

You can't rule out neither Pool nor Chelsea at this moment, especially with so much of the season still left. If it was January, perhaps. That being said, I think if we continue playing like we do, regardless of what either of them do, we stand a good chance. It's really up to us. And as for striker cover, although that would be nice, we still have enough players to get us goals. As long as we're the toughest team to score against, we'll manage the victories we need. We don't need to beat every team by 3-4 goals. A bunch of 1-0s will do just fine.

I honestly can't see why we can't finish above Manchester United. We have a defined style of play, we have a teamwork ethic which appears to provide defensive stability and a never say die attitude. Furthermore, we have a striker, in Kane, who has proved his skills before & might be about to come in to form.

Whereas I'm rarely convinced by Manchester United. Their performances are far from consistent, no attacking flair, no cohesion & so, over the course of the season, I can see them falling away.

I don't think we'll lose the fourth spot in the champions league. English teams will outperform the Italians in Europe.

The EPL has been on a spiral of decline for about 5 years now, and Serie A is improving all the time. It's a case of when, not if. All the EPL sides (including us) aren't looking great in Europe again this season.

I think given the current circumstances, Levy will find a compelling case to buy a decent striker in January.
I think we may well see a change from what we have been getting and expecting.

Do you honestly believe that?

They have had one decent side walk the league for a few season and there now getting some investment in some sides but generally it's the 4th best league and a way behind the rest IMO

Let's be realistic, we are still some way off top 4 material. After the fixture pile up towards the end of the year, we will fall away as our young and small swuad gets tired and Harry Kane gets injured/completely burns out.

We will just miss out on top 4 when yet again a possible opening has presented itself. We will bemoan the lack of signing another striker and we will have a half hearted moan at Levy.

If levy actually invests some money in Jan we might have a chance but we all know he will
Not so let's stop talking about top 4, we haven't got enough for a full season push. I hate this obsession with the top 4 anyway.

Compared to?

Compared to ourselves last season we're quite a bit stronger in depth actually, that's compared to us finishing 5th last season. All the players we lost were not contributing even to the standard of a squad player last season. Incoming we've seen Toby, Alli and Son make an immediate positive impact. Clinton is looking promising. At the same time quite a few players have upped their game significantly from last season. We have more experience than last season too.

Other than the striker position we actually have good cover in all positions. (Also not counting the GK position if you don't rate Vorm). And even up front we do have options in Son and Clinton at the very least.

Can't agree. As much as I hate the club, their fans and media, liverpool have a great chance of finishing above us so I don't know why people think we are so much better than them? I don't think they are great (I dont think we are either) but they have some excellent options up top and come the second half of the season when injuries and fatigue take hold having danger men coming in can win games. Added to th fact that they have a good manager who will inspire confidence I would be very worried to bet we finish above them.

I fully agree that this is way to early to talk about this stuff but we are too short in some key areas and as a Spurs fan I know that wil
Bite us in the arse come May.

Signing perez in jan would be a good move as if anything happens to kane for a period of time then we will really struggle

Liverpool have options up front, but in other areas they're much shorter than we are. Moreno is a talent, but makes horrible decisions quite frequently and behind him they have very little. Centre backs continue to be a problem. Who's their cover for Clyne? Deep in midfield Lucas and Can have some way to go to be good enough, even if they are the cover is not exactly great.

They have options up front. But Sturridge is injured a hell of a lot.

I think it's close between the two teams.

Your memory doesn't go back very far does it? A recent manager tried that and it didn't go down very well with us at all..

Look at how Fiorentina outclassed us last season. I wouldn't overly fancy us against any of the comparable team (Napoli, Roma, Lazio etc)

During pre-season I was quite happy to have another season of progress and another 5th/6th placed finish, I thought it unrealistic to aim for 4th with the squad requiring so much work.

However, we have been nothing short of brilliant so far this season.

Everyone has come on leaps and bounds, everyonePochettino's questionable decisions, such as not investing at CM, have been vindicated. We are looking like a proper team.

Last year we were quite frequently terrible, throwing away cheap goals and relying on individual brilliance and our superior fitness to bail us out late on in games. I think we picked up something like 15 points after the 85th minute. We didn't deserve 5th.

This year our results do not seem to be a flash in the pan, we have been scarily consistent and are one of the toughest teams to beat in the league.

I don't think 3rd is an unrealistic aim given the performances of United and Chelsea. I doubt we'll get it, or even come 4th, but we will be in the hunt without a shadow of a doubt.

And that is really quite exciting.

If we can keep this team together and get another striker and wide forward in, we could well be looking at a title challenge in the next couple of years.

It's not about what we might do against one of them though, it's about how the English teams currently in the CL do. Points are divided by the number of teams in Europe overall, but England have 4 teams in the CL compared to Italy's two and you get a lot more coefficient points in the CL than the EL.

Up to 5 clubs from any country can participate in the CL with the 4th placed team demoted to the Europa League only if both European competitions are won by clubs who finish outside the top 4 in the same nation.

I love that this is a topic for conversation, we give doom-mongerers a bad name, but chelsea aren't doing anything this year with or without jose, they're a complete mess that will take time that they don't have to sort out

I honestly don't think they did. We would beat any team in that league in a genuine game that we gave a sh1t about

that to me was the under dog putting in a performance

I think it's getting better but is a way behind the better leagues but ahead of the likes of the Dutch league for example

I still feel prepared for a 5th/6th place finish and feel that is about our level but if we manage to stay in touch by the turn of the year then I think we can definitely build on those expectations provided we get an injection of fresh blood just freshen things up and rejuvenate the enthusiasm.

We have a tricky November after tonight with the rest of our games domestically and in europe being of utmost importance. Following on from that we do have a reasonable December where we can build on a solid November or recover some ground if lost. My bet is that we will see a mixed bag over November with a reasonably strong December with a disappointing result somewhere within the month. If, after the Watford game on Dec 28th we are only 6-9 points off the top 2 then I would say we have a good chance of getting top 4.

Already been picked up on by others in the thread - but that was a close two-legged tie that they narrowly won against our reserves. If we didn't have a cup final three days later (or if Soldado wasn't a bottle job) I have little doubt we'd have beaten them.

My thoughts exactly

The only top team from Italy over the last few season were Juve and they were top notch imo

The remainder were very average but are improving

Look at Milan pre season who were imo awful yet are in a similar league position to us at the moment
