Daniel Levy - Chairman

And if results suffer? What are the ramifications of that? Why is it a catastrophic occurrence? Again, we are playing a long game with a long term strategy. Clearly the decision makers have understood the dichotomy between spending money to improve chances of wins, and have decided some players aren't worth it. They will understand the ramifications of the nuanced decision. I don't get the sense that the club is going to be finger pointing at each other behind the scenes. It seems they are all pulling in one direction to build something. United had to spend ridiculous money on an unproven 19 year old just to have a back up striker. The market is crazy.

Forget instant gratification and the obsession with the top 4 and start supporting a team that is growing together, and who the manager is proud to lead.
Do you think Poch will be our manager next season if we finish 7th or worse?

I can agree there's good reasons for Dier playing in midfield and clearly Poch is showing he would like more defensive balance there. But I maintain the point, it doesn't mean that spending £25M on Wanyama is going to significantly improve our chances of finishing higher. Poch clearly decided that he'd rather space was open for young players than keep Capoue and Stambouli just because they were archetypal DMs.

A good DM, I think he wants. DMs for the sake of it, I don't think so. Same with strikers.

And to take the alternate view, our wins against both Chelsea and Arsenal last season were achieved with Bentaleb and Mason/Dembele and Bentaleb and Mason respectively. So we beat the champions and another top 4 finisher, teams where you would expect us to most desperately need a DM against, without one.

I agree that he has done well, but he's yet to perform in games where we come under a lot of preassure. Still, him performing in that role only means we needed to add one dm instead of two imo.

He has shown enough in 4 games to suggest that he will improve and I disagree we now need to bring in another one for that position. We do not need to bring players in who will mostly sit on the bench we have just got rid of a few who did that.

Yeah, probably. Considering decisions were taken as a club with regards to squad strengthening, and considering Levy clearly rates him, I'd expect him to look beyond short term results in favour of the longer term plan.
Has he ever done this in the past?

Mason played about 15 minutes against Chelsea, and don't forgt that we conceded three goals in a home game...

In the arsenal game they scored early and decided to sit back for some reason. This allowed mason and bentaleb do flourish, as they were not tested defensively.

IMO that is my biggest gripe with Levy, he sacks to many managers far to often an is one of the reasons we are struggling to get any higher. Hopefully he has come to the conclusion that a manager needs more the a couple of years to build something and start to ignore the rantings of some fans when results are not always going well.

Has he ever done this in the past?

redknapp and ramos got away with end of season collapses, so did hoddle iirc

I think he's only pulled the trigger when he thinks he has a better option lined up (graham, jol),if there is a vocal group of fans demanding it (avb) or if he just can't stand the bloke anymore (arry and partly graham)

I can't see Poch getting the bullet this year unless a lot of fans want it*, even if we finish bottom half

* which some idiots will, we have some who think he failed last year

But we need some depth. The dm position is very vunerable to injuries, because it involves a lot of last ditch tackling. I agree paying 25M for wyanyama is ridiculous, but surely someone like Cambiasso on a free would help us out. Dier could also learn a lot from him.

I agree to a point but filling the squad with filler players is something we have decide not to do ( only time will tell if that is a good decision), we have a lot of young CM players and with help they should be able to cover IF Dier gets injured. As for Cambiasso I am not sure he would have wanted to be a bench filler at this stage of his life.

What about this game, then? Look at Mason's positioning on the first two goals. The guy isn't a dm. He's nowhere near. I made the mistake last season of thinking he was a bad player. He isn't he just isn't a dm.

Sure we have a lot of good young cm's, but they're all offensively oriented. The talent is unquestionable, but the balance is all wrong. Look how much better arsenal was after coquelin started playing. He's a very limited player, but he does all the dirty work well.

And as for Cambiasso, he wouldn't be just a bench filler. He could play cup games, and would be a great player to sub on when we needed to protect a lead.

I do not disagree with that, as most on here know I always said our main weakness last season was the inability of our CM to read the defensive side of the game. I have said that a CDM player should have been our priorty in the window and I am disapointed we did not get one

However in Dier I believe we have a player who could be just what we need and I am happy to see him stay in that position and grow. I see no need to have another one sitting on the bench because he would probably not be a good enough player to start and if he was would start moaning about not playing.

Now I have complained about Mason and Bentaleb and their inability to read the defensive side of a CM players game, however along with Alii , Pritchard, Carroll who are all mostly still young they have a chance to improve that part of the game.

we don't need someone making last ditch tackles we need someone reading the game making interceptions and being an out ball for the keeper

we need a carrick rather than a parker

Yes he would and the reason I say that is because if we want to push on and win something we need to play our better players in the majority of the big games. I doubt very much that a player of his standing would be happy to be a bit part player and I would understand that.

And if results suffer, we end in a lower league position then we could have been in if we made the logical decision of getting in a back up striker.

Depending on how much results suffer, this could lead to several events:

If results suffer a little ok fair play we miss out champs league by a few points, massively annoying but not the end of the world.

But what happens if results suffer a lot?

1.We lose our best players, and to those that say well we will just buy others.... Ok no one is bigger than the club, but how have we done replacing Bale or Modric or even Carrick ffs?

2.we drop to a position where we are unable to attract quality of player we are now.

3. Mid table puts the club in to a downward spiral, think Saudi Sportswashing Machine and where they were only a relatively short time ago

I could go on, but you get my point.

Agree, the best CDM are the ones that nick a ball because they read where the danger is coming from before it gets there and that is why I said so many times last season that Bentaleb and Mason do not have that defensive mindset. So many times they were caught ball watching which allowed opposing players to run in behind them.
