As for gomis. Classic small club striker (like bent), and I wouldn't want anyone who does that lion celebration in a Spurs shirt.

Embarrassing, I think not, the only reason we are having this conversation is because we tarted the season with one central striker with 2 days of the window to go. I think people are concerned that we have not been able to sign a suitable striker even though we knew at the end of last season we would be losing Ade and Roberto.

Out of curiosity what makes Gomis a classic "small club" striker? Would the same apply to Berahino or Bony? Anyway it is not like I would call us a classic big club these days.

If anything I would not call Bent "small club" more just one dimensional

I don't see the point in casting envious eyes at other clubs transfer dealings. What does it achieve? We have to realise that sometimes clubs will be better than us in identifying and signing talent. There are a number of reasons for it. Right place right time, better contacts or that signing may be more of a "risk" than our club is willing to take. That assessment of risk is a judgement and sometimes can be wrong.

Yes, we could have signed Ayew. He's started the season quite well and looks to be a real handful. Well done Swansea. We should aim for our club to have a better scouting network, a better identification of talent and contractual terms or better algorithm.

What I will say is that what this shows more than anything is that there if value in the transfer market. So the next time you find yourself turning your nose up at a transfer because the fee is quite small, or no other big club were in for him then there may just be a good reason for it. I have no regrets about not signing Ayew.

I think this window has been a frustrating one. I'm sure all those involved are frustrated as well. The one real error that I can point to is Son's transfer. If the reports are to be believed and he could have been available for a lot less earlier in the window, then you do have to wonder why we didn't take advantage of it. I would imagine Levy would be a little peeved about that as well. Having said that, there's plenty of justification to suggest that the reason we didn't was because we thought that we could get someone else.

The only thing it achieves is highlighting how tinkle poor our transfer business is and always has been.
Realistically there's only one common denominator in all of it.
Not poch, not Sherwood, not AVB, not Redknapp, not Ramos, not Jolie, not Santini, not Hoddle nor graham nor Arnesson or Comolli or Baldini.
The one constant is Levy.

When this season goes pear shaped around about November and he starts getting twitchy, in my opinion, he'll have two options.
1) Follow Poch out of the door.
2) Keep Poch as he is incapable of finding a suitable manager for THFC.

The Levy effect has long since expired and he now just costs us signings and points every window.

But our transfer business hasn't been tinkle poor. In fact it has generally been pretty good. Every club has successes and failures in the transfer market, ours are just amplified to us because we are naturally a lot closer to our own club's dealings. Other than the spell where AVB was in charge I think we have generally been successful, in the fact that we have had some HUGE successes, some useful, solid signings and even those that failed tended to be moved on for little loss (and even a profit in some instances)

You say that our transfer business is poor but we have gone from being a bottom half side to a consistent European side who is the best of the rest whilst signing good players on a roughly nil transfer spend.

I saw something a couple of years ago that we had the biggest profit on player sales of any club in Europe over the previous ten years. You don't do that by having tinkle poor transfer business.

Let's see where we are at the end of the season before deciding that we are left behind.

Our current transfer policy is detirmed by our income. We are building a new stadium to help us increase this and help us compete on more level terms with the clubs above us.

Yeah those small clubs who regularly finish below us and often find themselves in financial trouble/relegation battles - not sure we should be followimg their lead...

Buying lesser know young players who can develop here made the bulk of our best side in years - it wasn't until we mostly started buying established/high cost players that our side took a bit of a down turn post Redknapp

The type of established player who would come here would most likely not good enough for a top 4 team (unless we get lucky ala VdV), younger players with room to step up a level or two will come here and if they progress how we think they will we would have a player better than what we could have signed going the other way - it doesn't give instant rewards but over a few years of steady building we can end up with a team capable of mixing it at the top of the table (see Redknapps last season and the side which contained Lennon/Dawson/Modric/Bale/Ekotto/Walker - all players signed well before they reached their peak)
 
I feel cheated! At least the numptys at the two merseyside clubs put their hands in their pockets for airplane banners when they have a whinge!
 
At the Hammer first game of the season in the new stadium I would love a Tottenham fan to sort out one of those airplane banners with it saying. We are closer than you lot.

And yet how many times have those 'smaller clubs' finished above us in the last 10 years or so? Also how many 'bigger clubs' have we finished above in that same time?

We had gone from bottom half to consistent European side.
I can't see us troubling the European places this season.
