I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

He will go up a level this season imo.
Last season he was inconsistent but good in flashes or over 2-3 game periods.
As has been said defensively he puts in good shifts. Attacking wise he's creative in terms of slide-rule passes - he can see a pass and a picture of what's in front of him. He was also showing the ability to beat a man on occasion. I believe he was our top assist-creator too?
His biggest issue is his decision making on the ball - when he gets is right he can cut a team to ribbons but too often he picks the wrong pass. Its something that could come with game time/experience.
If he added 8-10 goals I don't think there'd be an issue - that is what was sorely lacking. A screamer against Burnley and one off his hand against So'ton doesn't really cut it in that RWF role.

We scored 61 goals last year - if Lamela made a decent contribution we'd be around the 70 goal mark - goals scored broadly aligns with points gained in the league.

He never looked liked scoring much at all though last season as a big chunk of his assists were corners

If he added 10 goals he would be perfect... But can anyone honestly see that happening???

We're crying out for pace wide on one side and his is clearly the weakest with regards to results so that's an area we need to improve on

Agree we need pace and yes, he's probably the one whose place is most in danger.
He missed a couple of sitters and hit the woodwork a couple of times last year so he could've had a handful more. I think even if he got 6 or 7 this year it would show enough improvement to warrant sticking with him

Despite that poor showing against RM I think he really is a number 10 and I can see why Poch tried him there. The right inside forward role does not suit him really IMO.

I think anyone who thinks he will have a breakout season next year is completely clutching. I guess that is all we have but I just see someone who has very little. If we could get a last min deal for him I would pack his bags for him.

Agree same with soldado, people are grasping at straws we have seen no sign from either in the 2 years that anything will change.
Would far rather see Winks Pritchard etc be given 20 mins at the end of a game than Lamela

Every time Onomah has played alongside Lamela in friendlies he has often played in an advance role and has looked more intelligent, more skilful more powerful and more assured than Lamela. If you had been in a coma for 5 years and were shown the two players, you would lay all you have on Onomah being the 30m signing.

I think the fact a raw 18 year old makes more right decisions and plays says it all

i'll say what i said at the end of last season - he's a frustrating player who get's a lot wrong, but also gets a lot right - he was our most effective creative player last season but that doesn't show through as much as it should as he dwells on the ball getting caught in possession too often which sticks in the mind more than the passes which put his team mates in to good goal scoring positions.

im hopeful he can cut the sloppy parts of his game out whilst continuing to improve his already good creative output, he's only just turned 23 after all - i don't think anyone considers Mason (24) close to the finished article yet nor was Danny Rose (25) so well thought of 2 seasons ago.

While I agree with parts of billyiddos post I am of the opinion that Lamela just like Soldado is just not suited to the premier league. Every game we all think its the one where he will finally get a great assist or score a wonder goal, but I just cant see it happening. All I have seen in the games I have actually seen him play (rather than tv highlights) his mind seems to be a few seconds behind. Always tries to beat one man to many or delays the pass too long so the moment is gone.
Really havent seen any improvemet in his time with the club, and I think we would be lucky to re coup half of the fee we paid for him if we could find a buyer. Shame Pritchard got injured as I think he would be far more effective than Lamela. Think he should be dropped and our youngsters given a chance

Imo having watched him last season, I think defensively he is perfect for Poch's system, as he is really good at closing down in packs. However (like I said before) he doesn't have good balance. The moment he is running at pace his touch and technique fails him. Great players have great balance. Physically he is very strong, he wins a lot of headers and and stands up to challenges. But the moment he starts charging forward with the ball his control disappears. I'm not sure what can be done about that?
As I say.... It is just poor technique.

The difference is perhaps that due to a number of injuries Mason has only had one season of top flight football, whereas Lamela has had several. Is Danny Rose really 25 now? Wow, time flies.... It only seems a short while ago that he was playing for England under 21s.

Due to injuries Lamela has only really had one full season in the EPL as well tbf

For a club focusing on youth I don't see the sense in writing off a 23 year old after 1 full season - which judging by the speed in which his performance in a friendly was pulled up on here - people are already doing

a performance in a friendly against one of the best sides in the game

there was definitely an improvement arc to his performances last season and we certainly don't have a guaranteed upgrade in the squad

I'm hopeful for Pritchard as well but the PL is going to be a massive step up for him and I doubt he'll thrive under too much pressure

From what I've seen of Pritchard he thrives off pressure

From what I've seen of lamella he doesn't thrive off anything so far

fair on Lamela, i'm not sure Pritchard has ever been under pressure, that might be more to do with my disrespect of the Championship though

i was shocked at how little I was shocked that he was shocking

What shocks me most about this website is how shocking he can be and yet some dont think he is shocking and continue to believe he will at some indeterminate time become something other than shocking.

I think Befordspurs either had a mini-stroke and hasn't realised yet, or is using Cortana/Siri to type his posts... almost every single post has some gibberish in the middle. Makes them painful to decipher.
