I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

just seems to be a player thats struggled with the physicality of the league. Much like di Maria who is similar in style to Lamela.

I thought he was improving at the tail end of last season. I wouldn't read too much into a pre-season match against Real. A lot of players had an off game really it is RM after all.
In saying that a goal in the first minute would have been a real confidence boost to him. Shame he didn't convert that.

no, cant agree with that Physically he is fine, very strong, fit, can run all day, from this point of view he is perfect for PL football

its the footballing side thats the problem, makes wrong decisions, sloppy in his passing, the ball tends to get stuck in his feet. I like the kid, and am very disappointed its not working out, but for his sake it might be time to find a new club

he's weak on the ball, especially in the league. defenders know if they get their body infront of him he can't do anything. in Italy, its different. In spain it's different. He'd get 10+ a season in the Spanish League, I have absolutely no doubts. He'd have so much time to run at the defence and shoot. He isn't used to this league and will never get used to it. It's no surprise that him in Italy and him and England are two COMPLETELY different footballers.

but thats not a physical problem, its a mental and technical one. There are many players who arent strong physcially but they have a sharp mind and quick feet to get past defenders, or have the ability to cleverly pass and move to make space and receive the ball back and make progress that way

technically, he's fine. probably one of the best in the team. Mental, maybe. He's a confidence player. His failure in the Premier League is similar to di Marias. Coming off a good season, team paying over the odds for you, not a quick footballer so cant beat a defender with pace, confidence battered due to injuries/lack of games.

cant agree with that either. Technically Di Maria is far superior and showed it quite a few times. His style is different to Lamela, is a much more confident dribbler and beats defenders with skill

yes, the similarity is there regarding confidence/injuries/lack of games and not having the full trust of your manager too imo, also of course the team paying over the odds.

Lamela on the ball looks awkward, i dont know why but thats what i see. Very strange

Really? Why does he have to stop to trap a ball? Why does he use his right foot only to stand on? Why does he fail to find team mates so often with passes, even when those passes are only 10 yard passes? Why does he lose the ball so often when dribbling? I think Lamela is an awful player technically. One thing he does have is vision, but his poor technique often means that he cannot utilise that vision.

he only ever does this for Spurs. If you watched him at Roma (which I did over 60+ times) and if you watch him for Argentina he's a different player. Great touch, dribbling ability is fine and his vision is top drawer. Just a case of Spurs ruining a footballer for whatever reason. Probably AVB failing to play him after terrorising team after team in the Europa League.

In that case it sounds like the player is extremely weak mentally. In which case we need to get rid of him ASAP.

Mental problems can be cured, technical problems generally can't unless they are very young. We need to show we can sort these type of players out and we could have a top level player in our hands. You'd think having an Argie coach would help.

Surely this is Lamela's last chance season with us. How many years left on his contract? It really is make or break for him now

At Roma he looked top top drawer

But what that says to me is who weak that league is (anyone not backing Juve to walk the title??)

Over here he shows a couplet lack of composure and technical ability. He has had to amen up for that with defensive effort which has to be applauded but doesn't hide his lack of attacking contribution

I can see Pritchard comfortably over taking him on that side this season which would be a massive measure of how far he has dropped (and Pritchard can play on the right as he did many times last season as well as central and left)

He would thrive at Atletico because he has the work rate and would get the time to play IMO

Imo having watched him last season, I think defensively he is perfect for Poch's system, as he is really good at closing down in packs. However (like I said before) he doesn't have good balance. The moment he is running at pace his touch and technique fails him. Great players have great balance. Physically he is very strong, he wins a lot of headers and and stands up to challenges. But the moment he starts charging forward with the ball his control disappears. I'm not sure what can be done about that?

I think it has a lot more to do with team dynamics than people are often prepared to credit. I'm always saying our players don't seem to work for one another as well as they could. You'll often see them watching someone trying to dig themselves out of a hole on their own instead of helping them out, or they'll position themselves to receive a ball that involves a chancy pass with a relatively low probability of coming off, so we lose possession, instead of of looking to make a better angle that will make the pass an easy one. You could put Messi in our midfield and he'd probably look less of a player than he is.

He will go up a level this season imo.
Last season he was inconsistent but good in flashes or over 2-3 game periods.
As has been said defensively he puts in good shifts. Attacking wise he's creative in terms of slide-rule passes - he can see a pass and a picture of what's in front of him. He was also showing the ability to beat a man on occasion. I believe he was our top assist-creator too?
His biggest issue is his decision making on the ball - when he gets is right he can cut a team to ribbons but too often he picks the wrong pass. Its something that could come with game time/experience.
If he added 8-10 goals I don't think there'd be an issue - that is what was sorely lacking. A screamer against Burnley and one off his hand against So'ton doesn't really cut it in that RWF role.

We scored 61 goals last year - if Lamela made a decent contribution we'd be around the 70 goal mark - goals scored broadly aligns with points gained in the league.
