Whoa whoa whoa. Saib was a superb player that never stood a chance once gooner George was put in charge.
I think Soldado is morphing from a Schevchenko type (goalscorer) to a Rebrov type (more of a creator, linking midfield and attack). Signing Rebrov (talented as he was) is probably the biggest waste of money this club has ever done. Not what we needed and probably not even what they thought they were buying at the time.
Perfect phrase to use in a Paulinho thread because it sums hium up perfectly as well as Rebrov.

Not just Baldini surely but also "out of sight out of mind" AVB who was part of the transfer committee and had a say on all these players. Do you think for example it was Baldini's choice alone to get rid of Huddlestone and replace with Capoue?

Nope, they'd focus on the one or two that weren't smashing successes or find something else to blame him for.

I think it's too harsh and too early to judge the signings from this season so I won't.
As for last season:
Bad - Soldado, Chriches, Capoue and Paulinho
Good - Eriksen and Chadli
OK - Lamela
2 out of 7 I would class as "good" signings. Lamela may turn into a good signing, but he's disappointed me so far. Not a great ratio so far.
Just out of interest, what do you think is the minimum requirement in terms of getting them right? Would you say half or just over/under? I accept that no one gets them all right.

Results have stayed the same as before. We've dropped one place in the league because Liverpool primarily have bought their way back in and Everton had an outstanding season. Both have got off to a worse start than us this season.

i don't know really, those sorts of targets are a bit futile when we don't even know which players are the target of whom at the club. Paulinho, for example, has recently spoke about how AVB was the driving force behind his transfer - so do you blame Baldini for signing the player his coach wanted? keeping in mind how everyone feels about our managers not getting backed in the market...
what i look at is generally all those deals were concluded with minimum fuss, we had our targets, decided upon by the relevant parties, and he went out and got them in - deals which were stalling weren't perused all summer leaving us scrambling around in the last few days desperately trying to fill empty gaps in our squad. it's areas like this which i think are the real benefit of a DoF.
If you need an answer from me then i guess id say that as long as the squad/team improves overall then specific numbers are of no real importance. and in terms of improvement i would say that needs be seen over a number of seasons, rather than the one and a bit we have had Baldini here.
I'll be interested to see what happens next summer, once Pochettino has had a season to evaluate the squad and what moves that brings about in the market.
Well, you can judge them by watching them play and combine that with their stats, and then mark that against how much they cost and how they have done against the previous performances of players that they have replaced.
Someone like Soldado has been an utter failure because he has hardly scored, cost loads of monery, and we could have had a traffic cone upfront in his place and got just about the same amount of points (someone else could have taken his penalties!). As a replacement for Defoe, in terms of output and cost, he has been a bad signing.
Paulinho just looks awful in nearly every game, with a couple of good performances chucked in. As a replacement for either Hudd or Livermore, given the huge amount of money he cost, he's been a bad signing.
Chiriches looks pretty bad at all aspects of defending. He replaced Caulker, who wasn't great either. So we sold one bad young defender and replaced him with one who is also bad, with the added bonus of being poor in the air. Bad signing.
Chadli has done well this season, he also didn't cost too much. As a Dempsey replacement, he is proving to be a good signing.
Eriksen did quite well last season and is doing ok this season. I guess he has replaced Sig in the squad, and has done better for us than he did imo. He also didn't cost too much, he's been a good signing.
Capoue -- for me, he isn't good enough defensively for a defensive midfielder. I don't see any improvement over Sandro/Hudd and imo, has so far proven to be a poor signing. Hit and miss, but more miss.
Lamela. I think he's been a poor signing, although unlike Soldado and Paulinho he has youth on his side. But for £30m, he's been really bad value for money, and assuming he's a Bale replacement, he hasn't given us anything like the impact. But as I say, he has youth on his side. For me though, poor value and would have to go down as a poor signing.
IMO, we'd be no worse off if we simply hadn't signed Chiriches, Paulinho, Soldado, Capoue and Lamela and used Caulker, Bentaleb, Defoe, Huddlestone and Townsend in place of each of them respectively. We wouldn't really be any better with those players, but we wouldn't be worse and we'd have saved a lot of money.

Not very good = Capoue
Has to prove themselves = All of this seasons signings and Lamela
Pretty good = Chadli
good = Eriksen
It might not be much of a difference, but apart from Chiriches they're all improvements. Defoe and Huddlestone were nowhere near the players they were in their prime when they left.
