We could be planning for the 15/16 season. Would not be surprised if a release clause of some sort has been negotiated in his new contract that is likely to be triggered next summer if certain aims are not met this season. Signing a long-term contract means nothing these days. In fact, it all seems rather ominous when a player that is in serious demand at a less fancied club signs a new deal, of late it often seems to suggest that a transfer out the club is looming. Two similar cases that spring to mind are Bale and now Suarez.

Hopefully i'm wrong and this doesn't pan out the same way.

But why would we sign Vorm now just so that we can keep him on the bench? He won't become a better player for his forced idleness. Besides which, he isn't good enough to be Hugo's replacement. If and when Hugo leaves, we will want a better keeper than Vorm to replace him as No. 1.

Far more likely that Vorm has been bought so that we have more of a like for like replacement if and when Hugo is injured.

what if the issue is friedel ? ok vorm is #2 but with experience as #1 and more so in a sweeper keeper system that brad isn't.

An author of a piece I read earlier speculated that Vorm was #2 this season as Lloris would likely leave next summer if we don't bag Champs League football. It's not something worth thinking about, however it is a possibility.

Surely its mixture of many factors.
Future planning by us and an opportunity for Vorm to play Cup and EL games.

Maybe even use the two keepers throughout the season if they get a knock, form dips or we get a EL draw all in eastern Europe.

Vorm is easily good enough to face 12-14 of the PL teams

We are edging towards 2 good players for every position.
Even Rose is mid table PL

Of course it's a possibility that Hugo will leave.

But I really can't imagine that:

a) Spurs are signing Vorm a year ahead of schedule - and plan to leave him twiddling his thumbs on the bench - just so that we have our new first choice (previously second choice) keeper already at the club when Hugo leaves.

Or that:

b) Spurs actually think that Vorm is good enough to be our first choice keeper.

Indeed, but by building a strong squad you have

a) a strong squad and good PL keeper to come in (Hugo could break his leg on Sept 2nd)

and

b) if Hugo does leave next summer you have a good PL keeper ready and waiting meaning i. you don't have to scramble around to find a keeper as the one you have can do an adequate job and ii. won't be held quite so much to ransom for a keeper.

Good keepers are hard to come by, and as Brad said in the pre-Seattle press conference, the PL is quite a different experience for an GK coming into it. Look at the keepers that have come from abroad and struggled to start with; Schmeical, Van Der Sar, de Gea, Stekelenburg etc etc

I can only think of Lehmann and Cech as two top keepers that have come in from abroad and hit the ground running - but you could add Vorm to that I think.

He is certainly an adequate PL GK for a top half team - you don't become a Dutch Int'l for nothing - so gives us a great option as well as being contingency planning if needed.

It wouldn't surprise me if part of the agreement he has is "play Cup and EL games primarily", get your reputation back up and if we manage keep Hugo next summer we help Vorm move to be 1st choice somewhere. (especially if we think Archer will be ready to be no.2 next summer after a loan this year?)

I don't disagree with most of that.

What I disagree with is the notion expressed by some others that the signing of Vorm is succession planning and that we intend him to become our No.1 next summer on the assumption that Hugo will be leaving.

For us it makes a lot of sense either way. At worst it's a reasonable fee for a very good backup goalie. Even better if he's good enough to replace Hugo should he move on to bigger things a year or two from now. Even better than that Hugo stays and we sell Vorm either at a profit or breaking even in a couple of years.

Sky Sports News now reporting BD has completed his medical in the states, cost in the region of £10million

Having Vorm as a backup would be a great bit of business. He plays in the style we need as a sweeper keeper. Is a good shot stopped and a more direct replacement for hugo if he is injured than Brad.

Its hard to get excited about Davies. To me it seems like he is not such a big step up from Rose. And to be honest I would prefer to give our home grown players longer to prove themselves. 10m for an average player it seems. Now if he shores us up defensively down our left that ill be thankful. But hey. Its a left back.

It's quite good when FBs are not exciting. Head down, do their job, practically unnoticed because they don't put a foot wrong.

I think Davies could become our Dennis Irwin.

Agreed. And doing so at a young age for a defender too. There have been a handful of standout very young full backs over the years, but a lot of full backs that have gone on to be very good have been not that different from that description. And I'm guessing most full backs that have come in to the PL from abroad would have done no better than Davies had they been signed by a PL club at 19-20, including most that have gone on to be very good.

I agree 100%.... A fullback who defends properly and links up well with teammates and uses the ball well when going forward. Both Irwin and Gary Neville did this and IMO are amongst the best fullbacks we have seen in the PL.

Left backs are a huge commodity in recent years. Man Utd just paid 30 million for Luke Shaw and Chelsea paid 20 milliion for Felipe. Emirates Marketing Project paid 19 million for Kolarov. Arsenal paid 8.3 million for Monreal. Liverpool paid 8.3 million for Enrique and may pay 20 million for the Sevilla LB.

We have potentially managed to get a solid player in that position for less than the average price the top teams are paying. He is only 21 and is home grown.

A real no brainer.

Never been Rose biggest fan, but time away can make you reassess things and think differently. Hopefully Ben Davies is going to work out to be a great signing, but I'm almost magically hoping that Poch can magically transform underperforming players. Rose to his credit has some good attributes. He's not all terrible. But there has been games where I felt he just gave the ball away constantly. But I may have been watching him with my mind made up ready about him.
