As far as I'm aware Arcade Fire sell a lot of albums worldwide, so commercially they were a safe bet. Mumford and Sons closed the show last year, Arcade Fire opened it this year. Think Mr Eavis might be in need to hand over the reigns.

May well have spent over the odds getting the Stones last year and had to reign it in since

I think financial reasons are almost certainly behind this - either that or Eavis is no longer able to distinguish between a musical movement and a silly fad.

It's just a shame to see Glastonbury going so far downhill. It used to have huge acts headlining, the very smallest of which would be the likes of Kasabian - now bands like Arcade Fire are making Kasabian look like a big act.

Metallica are obviously huge in their genre, but even they probably aren't the kind of act you'd expect to headline Glastonbury (maybe on the other stage).

I just don't see how it can be tough to get the really big acts in. They charge a lot of ****ers a lot of money every year - there must be plenty to throw at quality bands.

**EDIT**

If the Fleetwood Mac rumours (pun not intended) for next year are true then that's back to what I'd expect.

In fact, I've just looked up the headliners for the last few years and this year was worse than I thought.

In recent years we've had:

The Stones, U2 (**** but huge), Coldplay (sbh), Beyonce, Muse, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z, The Who, Paul McCartney (sbh), Oasis, Muse, REM, Radiohead.

That's just one stage for the last 10 years. Metallica can probably hang onto the coattails of that lot but the other two? They don't even register.

Metallica hanging on to the coattails of Coldplay Oasis and Muse? lol - bigger than all three put together

Arcade Fire were the least questionable headliner this year

In some circles, yes. They're the biggest metal band there is. That doesn't translate across genres though.

If you ask my Mum to name a Metallica track she'd struggle. She could easily name a couple of Oasis/Coldplay ones and remember Muse as "Those nice boys who covered Feeling Good".

I expect Glastonbury headliners to have achieved something. Growing a beard that makes one look like a douchbag is not an achievement.

Canada is also a musical wasteland. For a country with that population, to have only ever produced Leonard Cohen, Neil Young (before the 80s turned him into uber ****) and Joni Mitchell as artists of any worth is poor.

Arcade fire will just get filed away next to Nickelback in the not very good and quite irritating Canadian bands list.

:ross:

Heard about Rush? The Guess Who? Crystal Castles? Holy ****?

There's tons of awesome music coming out of Canada, but I do agree that Arcade Fire and Nickelback don't fall into that category.

Of course I have - I did take them all into account when selecting artists of worth. Rush are incredibly talented but that doesn't always make a great band. The Guess Who were a good training ground for musicians to cut their teeth. Crystal Castles - HELL NO!

Glad we agree on Arcade Fire though.

Canada have apologized for Bryan Adams on several occasions, just as they have with Celine Dion.

Bryan ****ing Adams

 It's true (on wiki anyway, good enough). Must be the lead singer of Loverboy next (pretty sure they're Canadian).
