I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Re: Official - Lamela

Partly that, but remember his reputation coming out of Argentina that Roma paid somewhere in the neighborhood of €20m for him. And that was from River Plate who had just gotten relegated and were in no position to negotiate a good fee.

Does anyone know if Baldini was DOF at Roma at the time they paid that for him. If so the chances of Lamela leaving are nil as you'd assume Baldini has the most power in buying/selling terms. Even if he wasn't if Baldini stays he can hardly write off 10's of millions in transfer fees so early in his career here.

Re: Official - Lamela

I may be in minority, but it's a nobrainer for me, that Lamela is more gifted and has better potential than overrated cnut Costa. Lamela just needs time and a PROPER coach to settle him. His departure this summer will be a very huge dissapointment for me, nearly equal to Eriksen and Lloris possible transfers.

Agreed. Lamela is a superstar talent, us conspiring to **** it up doesn't erase that.

Plus he was £26m, the £4m bonuses were never met with us failing to qualify for the CL.

An announcement of Baldini joining Roma from July 2011: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/england/8638781/England-general-manager-Franco-Baldini-takes-Roma-job-but-will-be-back-to-help-England-at-Euros.html

Lamela joined Roma in August, so he was certainly there when that deal was completed. Guessing about the roles of various backroom staff in particular signings is always tough, but it seems likely to me that Baldini rates him very highly.

Re: Official - Lamela

The boys got talent. Lets see how he gets on with the new manager. Even if it doesn't work out it doesn't mean he or any other player is necessarily a poor player. They need managing.

Look at Mbia and Carrico at Sevilla. Win the Europa league and yet they are on loan from QPR and Reading respectively.

Managers need to earn their keep. It's their job to try and get their talents to function and fulfill their potential

Agree fully, I think people are way too quick when judging players as "****", "useless" etc.

I also think that people are a bit too quick at judging players as not suited for the Premier League just based on it not working out for them at one club or under one manager.

The manager is and always will be the most important signing a club will make a bad one can destroy a club and the damage can go on long after they have gone

I'd say a manager is sometimes only a part of the problem(s), especially given our set up. In our case this season, Baldini brought in a bunch of new players. The club then decided that (among other things), AVB wasn't the man to take them forward, and they got rid. Sherwood was then appointed, the club drew similar conclusions, and again got rid. Its not ideal, but in the overall scheme of things, I'm not sure how much damage has been done by the manager(s)? If they go with Poch, and he doesn't do well, they will get rid in about 18 months. You could say they could have appointed Rafa during that time and he could have got us Top 4, so in a way there'd be damage by subtraction. But given our set up, I guess I'm just wondering how you feel a manger (the next one?) could destroy our club?

It was the last one I was referring to ;)

That's assuming baldini chose all the new players and avb did not really want them this I struggle to believe ,they may not have been his first choice but I doubt he said no to any of them

Re: Official - Lamela

I'm happy that with either of the front runners Poch or FDB in charge it's very probable that he will be utilised properly.

[-o< I'm dreaming that he just blows the whole league away in the next couple of seasons.

Fixed it for you.

Re: Official - Lamela

It would be just our luck if that happened, he'd finally have learned English only to move to Spain!

Re: Official - Lamela

Italian TV apparently claiming that four clubs are after Lamela. If Levy can get some kind of bidding war going, then I can see him cashing in rather than risk his value dropping even further if he fails to settle.

I suspect our new manager will have some input here... does he think he can get the best out of Lamela (if he can't then who could?) or would he rather take the cash and invest it elsewhere?

I think we will sell and buy Lallana.......I don't think Poch gives a fcuk that Lamela is a fellow Argentinian.

But its in his interests to help develop a fellow argie for the national team and to live up to this reputation of developing young players?

Re: Official - Lamela

If we were to be offered anywhere near what we paid then he will be off. I want him to stay and see how he develops.

It depends. Instead of waiting for Lamela to develop he could get in some we who is fully ready like Lallana. Who knows what will happen, but I think there will become or two surprises that's for sure :)

Re: Official - Lamela

Based on what?
Just a feeling that Poch will do what's best for the team, not what's best for any individuals and that includes Erik. The fact the are both Argentinians won't have a bearing on anything imo.

Re: Official - Lamela

If we sell lamela and Soldado now, we are stupid. Players often need more than one season to get going, and in those two we have amazing talents. Soldado is a goalscorer, he hasnt forgotten how to kick the ball in the net. At Valencia he was the captain, the leader and topscorer. Here he was deemed a flop after 7 games by some. Lamela has barely played and still fans want him out. Wtf? He is one of europes brightest attacking talents. Wake up!!
