Jan Vertonghen

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

No, the point is how easily can we replace "one of our best players"? Look at our transfer history, look at our place in the transfer hierarchy, look at our likely budget come the summer. How likely is that we find not one, but two centre backs that are better or as good as Vertonghen?

Or is it more likely that we can make it work with him in the team, perhaps get a manager that can get the best out of someone with "his attitude"? People say he has the "typical Dutch arrogant attitude", well there might be a manager available to us come the summer that's worked really well with some Dutch players in the past. Where some arrogant Dutch players have been important players in teams doing really well...

Or in other words, do we get rid of the very good player sick of playing with "a bunch of amateurs" (your words, not his or mine) or do we get rid of the "amateurs"?

Which part of that exactly was so bad? Can you quote the unacceptable part? Seems like a perfectly fine answer to me.

Players arent stupid. When they start speculating about where they are going to play. They know the message they are sending. If he was committed to Spurs, he would have answered in the way Erikson did, "I'm happy here, I'm going no-where." But he didn't did he? Not quoting because I cannot be bothered looking it up.

Eriksen is 21, and has been at Spurs for 6 months.....Vertonghen is 26/27 and has been at Spurs for nearly two seasons. At his age, Verts wants to CL football and to be competing for trophies. Most of his international teammates are in this position, and he wants the same. Of course he is more undecided than someone like Eriksen

Again, you seem to be going off on a tangent, I never said sell him. It's fairly obvious that he will be sold though, he will demand to leave and we will oblige so all this talk of getting in Dutch managers and replacing amateurs with Dutch players is all rather futile, the guy has already left the building in his mind. Personally I rate Vlad as highly as Vertonghen anyway so I'm not worried about directly replacing him.

In the real world the best players on our books will want to move to bigger clubs, such is life.

We can either try to push forward to meet their goals or we can accept mediocrity and players who are happy just being at a top half PL club.

Not sure what kind of loyalty you're expecting, but it seems to be way beyond what we can realistically expect from Vertonghen. And way beyond what we can expect from most players. When asked directly about their future they won't rule out a move.

Plenty of people have been saying that we should get rid, that we should actively look to sell.

You brought up his attitude as a problem. I responded to that.

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

happy to sell if we make a good profit. there will be other fish to fry.
thats what clubs that don't have stability and trying to get into CL do.

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

Virgil van Dijk looks a pretty decent player, not sure whether bigger clubs will be in for him or not. On the plus side he actually is Dutch unlike Jan the pretender. We may need up to three CBs this summer so I hope we're looking.

how is that pronounced, Van D!ck or Van Dike. Either way, doesnt sound very commanding for a centre half:lol:

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

Van Dike then....im not surprised he has Virgil on the back of his shirt. :) So what kind of money are we talking here. I seem to remember we once paid 9 mill pounds for an alcoholic Glasgow Rangers right back and that was way back in 2008. I also recall many on here being up in arms about taking a chance on paying 5 mill for Gary Hooper who was ripping it up in the Scottish top division.

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

Would be sad if he left in the summer. Vertongen and Walker are our only top defenders. If Spurs wants to be a top four club we cant sell ur best players every season.

Not sure, £10m-£12m maybe.

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

Van Dijk is going to a Champions League club. The guy has got people after him from all over Europe.

As for Jan. I'd love for him to stay but you can see he bought into the idea of playing with Bale, VdV and Modric under Harry Redknapp. What he has got is two seasons of crap under AVB and now Sherwood. I honestly think that his perceived attitude problems stem from other members of the squad not pulling their weight. Last year only he and Bale looked like top 4 players, this season we don't even have one.

The kind of loyalty I expect, is not to tart yourself around the media to other clubs. Is that unreasonable?

I remember reading the chapter in Redknapp's biography where talked about Munich. He said that after all the pain he went back to his hotel and thought to himself (something along the lines) "With Vertonghen done all we need now is a new striker and the skys the limit next season"

If only we did got CL football that year....

____________Lloris______________

Walker__Dawson__Vertonghen__BAE

Bale___Sandro____Modric___Haazard

_________Van der Vaart___________

______Adebayor/New Striker_______

:(

In the end he saw the likes of Dempsey come in, a wee bit underwhelming.

As yesterday his body language said it all, pretty shameful tbh.

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

At least Jan looked very happy to be playing for Belgium midweek.

yeah yeah everyone said the same about Vertonghen when he was being linked with moves away from Ajax

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

I actually really like the look of Chiriches and I think he can replace Jan if he goes in the summer. He's probably been the most impressive of our 7 summer signings along with Eriksen.

It would be a shame to lose Jan, but he's not as irreplaceable as the likes of Bale, Modric etc. If he wants to go (i.e. transfer request etc) and we get the money he should command, then let him go. We'll be able to buy a new defender to play with Chiriches.

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

This thread has been interesting reading lately - it's amazing that we have so many intuitive posters on the board who can read players like a book from a few clips on a tv screen once a week.
