Aaron Lennon

Worked hard today, along with Walker he kept the Eveton left side very quiet throughout. Made some excellent runs in behind their back line and could have gotten free a couple of other times where Everton defenders did really well against him.

Far from his best game, but a good effort for the team.

Amazing performance today. He managed to stand next to Baines whenever we had the ball and keep 20 yards away from him when they had the ball. He has been awful for 3 months.

You're asking him to do that? good luck.

Anyway it's clear Dawson wasn't bad (second half he was good). Sadly he's a very easy target to some...a real shame.

I thought Daws was really strong today, perfect sort of game for him once the first 20 mins were out of the way, defended a little deeper and Vertonghen finding match fitness helps the cause too. I thought Azza worked hard, very hard, but Everton are a tough tough side. This was a good, gritty win IMO.

First and foremost Lennon is in the side to create for us going forward, so spin it on its head, did he have even one successful cross or dribble today ???

First and foremost footballers are in our side to win us points. That's all players, including Lennon.

If they're attacking or defending players their overall contribution is what counts. If a winger prevents a goal by excellent tracking back and work rate isn't that just as valuable as if a full back does it? And similarly isn't an assist from a full back just as valuable as an assist from a winger?

I really don't get this "defenders should defend, attackers should attack" attitude at all. Look no further than Chelsea against City and how the attacking 4 for Chelsea defended brilliantly and the contribution to that game, look to Barca or Dortmund and their pressing.

My post was in direct response to a poster claiming that Lennon spent his time 20 yards away from Baines whenever they had possession. Yet Baines had a very quiet game going forward, a player we know is capable of causing havoc if given space and time. Either Walker is superman or there was something a bit off with that observation I think.

Like I said in my previous post, this was far from his best game. I don't think he played in any good crosses, but I thought he contributed decently in our passing overall and he was a real threat on the break. If players had spotted his runs or if Dembele's through ball had been slightly more accurate I think he would have gotten into some really dangerous situations.

To me, if a player's poor performance is a performance like this in a big-ish game then that's a decent compliment. Look at how Ferguson included Park in his big games over and over, did Park always deliver magic in the final third? No, but he worked his socks off for the team, made United hard to play against and hard to beat. And he was capable of doing something special from time to time or if put in the right situation.

If he isn't getting the ball early enough to exploit his pace then he isn't going to hurt a team. He made a lot of good runs cutting inside but as with every attack today there were no forward options, our movement was poor.

I think one of the reasons he was relatively ineffective today was because our midfield simply did not find him quickly enough. Everton were very quick to shut down the space.

I saw that in the chalk board thread, it's wrong, I clearly remember a cushioned header to Paulinho in our LB position which isn't there, it's only 1 pass admittedly but if they got an obvious one like that wrong how accurate are they overall?

One thing that concerned me was that in the pre-match interviews TS said he wanted Lennon to come inside and get involved. Lennon is at his best with his heels on the line, one on one with the full back, not running with the ball from right to left across the half-way line time and time again.

He needs to be played this way and the team needs to be set up to get the ball to him early and get him into situations where he is one on one with the full back. It's even more important when you have someone like Eriksen on the other side.

The only time he should ever come inside if it is within 20 yards of Goal and is to have a shot or it's a run without the ball to pull the fullback away and create space for Walker.

that's been a feature of our season and everyone is guilty, we need to move the ball quicker, it's ponderous

There were quite a few times yesterday where a lot of space opened up for Walker down that right hand side. However it is Lennon was moving it did seem to do at least that part of what you want.

Agreed. We need to give it to Bentaleb more :)
